Baby drinking
« on: March 18, 2009, 12:55:33 pm »
Hi

I have started weaning my 6 month old baby and all is going well with the food.  However i am offering him water to drink, but he seems to struggle taking it from a beaker.  I have tried two different types.  He will take it happily from an open cup, but ends up soaking wet as so much of it is spilt - so this is not a long term solution.  I am struggling to drop milk feeds because i think he is using them to quench his thirst.

Any advice out there?

Thanks
My little Tootsie all nice and Cutsie

It's too soon to be dropping any milk feeds.  At this point, solids should not be a replacement for any milk feeds as bm/formula is so important for brain and body development.  It contains all the nutrition, fat and calories that that is required for optimal growth.  Most babies don't start to drop a milk feed until closer to 10 mos or later.  As for drinking from a beaker or sippy cup, you really have to be patient.  It can take a while for your ds to get used to it.  Have you tried a straw?  Or try removing the valve from the sippy so it is more free-flowing?

There are basically two things you can do:  keep buying different sippies until you found one that he likes or stick to just one kind and eventually he will get it.  BTW both of mine really like drinking from a straw cup.

Yah, don't worry about cutting out milk yet... just keep offering the cup for practice.  It took my DD over a month, closer to two, to actually start picking it up to purposely drink from it.

I agree with pps. We went through 3 sippy cups before we found one that lo liked. He still doesn't know how to tip it up though when he's holding it, so a straw one might be good ???
