keep second guessing myself .....
« on: March 20, 2009, 22:36:32 pm »
hi there

DD is on Nutramigen for the past 2 weeks now and I have seen a big improvement in the back arching and, to start with at least in the amount of feed taken.
She is now also on Ranitidine for suspected Reflux as after 12 hours sleep hasn't been hungry.  On the meds she now takes a good first bottle in the day.

DD all day today though keeps spitting up during every burp (and sometimes in between feed times) but rather than it being the clear acid/bile like before it is really mucousy and milky.

Could this be the meds or could it be the MSPI coming through as her maybe being intolerant to Nutramigen now do you think?  I know it still contains milk protein.

I go from thinking I've found a "fix" to being none the wiser AGAIN  ::) and its making me feel really flaky as one minute I'm telling the paediatrician and health visitor "oh things are really improving" to feeling foolish about "oh actually maybe they've gone backwards again".

Sorry ... feeling a bit confused about the MSPI & Reflux subjects and possibly each mimicking symptoms.

I feel the same way.  Fortunately, I had a friend visiting for two weeks during a really rough period w/ dd and she was able to witness the reactions dd was having to reflux meds and Nutramigen.  My MSPI girl did react to Nutramigen poorly (runny poo and really fussy which is how she reacts to any dairy).  My only suggestion is to keep a log so you know exactly what's going on and when b/c the days do tend to run together even when difficult.  If your Dr gets frustrated w/ you it's probably only because they've run out of ideas (as I think mine has).  My Dr's comments to dd's reaction to Nutramigen and Prilosec was "I have a hard time believing she's reacting to everything".  Sheesh.

Is your dd on the Nutramigen AA or just the Nutramigen?

Definitely agree with the log.  The tiredness of life with a reflux baby is immense.  But to have your refluxer as a second child just adds insult to injury - IMHO.  The days and reactions to med/food changes just blend into one big blur.

I'm not well versed in formula.  So sorry can't help you much there.

Just wondered how long she's been on the Ranitidine?

feeling a bit confused about the MSPI & Reflux subjects and possibly each mimicking symptoms.
Depending on what literature/web page you read between 25% and 60% of reflux babies have a milk protein intolerance/allergy.  Sometimes the reflux is a symptom of the milk protein intolerance/allergy, other times it is a whole issue on it's own.

Hi there

She's only been on the Ranitidine just over a week.  It has definitely been helping with the intake of the first bottle.

She fed loads at the weekend (four really good bottles for a few days) but yesterday she barely ate, was really fussy, spitting up loads of clear acidy fluid and doing mucousy bm's.  Spoke to health visitor and wonder if she has milk overload and getting intolerance again. There are definitely milk proteins in the Nutramigen 1.  Maybe she needs Nutramigen AA / Neocate??

So far today she woke earlier than normal, took 3 oz, threw it up, smiled then went back to sleep ..... where she still is now.

She definitely prefers sleeping to feeding  ::)  thats nearly 14 hours now with a short awake gap !!!

HV says to see how she is over next couple of days and contact paediatrician if it looks like her appetite has dipped again like before the Nutramigen.

After three months on Nutramigen I asked my paed last week why my DS was still spitting up all of the time - and sometimes spitting up breakfast foods in the late afternoon, even.  All he said is that babies spit up.  Lots.  And some babies spit up more than others.  If he's not in pain with the posset, and it's not green bile, then there's nothing to worry about.  My DS will some days spit up a handful with every burp, as well, and fortunately he did so when we were at the paed's and he still said that it's nothing to worry about. It's just spit up - which is much different from the vomiting that he was doing before he was on Nutramigen.

But, agree with the others - keep a good log, and remember that pictures speak a thousand words.  Take a picture of every mouthful of spit up - be it on the carpet, on a bib, in your hand, etc. Keep the time-stamp on the camera and take your camera in so the doc can skim through the pics and have a clear picture of how much and how often you are talking about.  I found that my camera with pics and a couple of videos was worth waaaaay more than anything else for my doc in making a good diagnosis!

Hugs, you are going through a tough time.  Perhaps it would be good to suggest the Nutramigen AA when you talk to your Ped?  See if things get better on it.  The pics and logs is a really great idea too.  Keep us updated!  Hopefully the doctor will be able to help, but it wouldn't hurt to ask about the AA.
