Do I **need** to move up to a more advanced sippy cup?

I realised last week that the cups that we have for DS are aged 4+ months. We started giving him water in a sippy when we introduced solids at 6 months, but these ones came in a full kit with bowls, spoons, etc. The ones I have are just a plain plastic cup with a small spout.

Now I see that there are sippy cups for 6+ months, 8+ months, etc etc.  Is there anything majorly different about them and you "should" be moving up in cups, or can he keep on these ones until he doesn't need sippies anymore?

Erm, if so, I was not following guidelines, lol.

I couldn't get DS to take a normal sippy at all, the valves were just to much. We went straight to a straw cup, and regular cups.

I think maybe they suggest it because the strength required to suck is decreased as they get older, so there is a smaller chance of choking on too much of their drink.

Really, I would save your money and go with what works best for your ds.

I've got this too and used one with Sophie. In fact, she has taken to using hers again cos she wants to be like Alex  ::)

Anyway, over the last 2 years or so I must have spent over a hundred quid on too- numerous- to- mention bl**dy sippy cups, straw cups, open cups, etc etc etc. My conclusion is, it makes absolutely no difference at all, if they are thirsty, they will drink out of it, no matter what the shape/ size/ colour. And most of them, especially those that claim to be non spill, are a bugger to clean and after a while the spouts get so grim you have to chuck them away. Save your money!!!!!

The only one I absolutely have to have is an Anyway Up Cup:

It's the only one that is totally and properly non- spill so I use it to put some water by Sophie's bed in case she needs a drink in the night (asthma = lots of night coughing) and as she drops it in her bed the non spilliness is essential. And it's the easiest one to clean.

Very glad to hear it! We will stick with our little ones, DH and I had sort of assumed that it was marketing, to try to get you to buy new cups every 2 months, seems that must be what it is!

i ditto Keri. DS never too to the sucking kind of spouty cups and we moved directly to a straw - the enlightenment for me was wehn DS took to my frapaccino with ease through the straw and we have never looked back. I think those are like 8+ but he still uses them.

also some one on the board ha dtodl me atht apparently speech therpaists etc do not like the spout cups as they say they do not use all the necessary muscles of the mouth and can cause speech delays., Nw this is not a proven fact only what some say.

Also what i prefer about the straw ones is taht you acn go anywhere and you will always find a straw to feed the LO, and even on airplanes travelling etc. so its a really useful skill.

We used the Nuby ones -I think they are Tommy Tipee in the UK flip top, leak proof, great :) come in insulated and non insulated versions as well.

and dont lets these people make you spend more money of sippy cups your LO will make you do enough!

I think some of the rec's also have to do with making the sippy less bottle-like as the child's mouth develops.  (Like docs reccommend that you stop bottle use by X age.)  Not that marketing is not involved.  ::)

What exactly IS a straw cup? I mean, I can obviously make some assumptions, but not sure what one is and can't find any in my catalogues and things that I just flipped through.  Also, wouldn't sucking through a straw be more bottle like than a spout?

Huh...  I just went looking for some links for you, & what I found suggested that it was more what was *in* the sippies (i.e. often sugary stuff) is the main culprit (i.e. causing cavities) rather than the shape of the cup.  I was thinking it was something to do with the spout pushing on the teeth, but couldn't find evidence of that at all.  My mistake.  Sorry.  :-[

Literally, a cup with a straw in it. No valves. If you get First Years there, I highly rec this one. Dirt cheap for a pack of 5, and although tossable, I've handwashed and reused ours for 1.5yrs now.

You could also get one of these. They sell them in some supermarkets and walmart type stores. As well as bowls (great for soup and cereal). Actually, I could only find the link for bowls, but the cup is the same, just skinnier and taller, lol.

Mutka - they must be because they banned BPA here in Canada and stores still sell them (it is completely illegal to sell anything with BPA now).
I can't really check because they don't come in packaging, but BPA was also used more to allow plastic to be perfectly clear. These obviously aren't, lol.

Oh sorry, I am referring to the bowls and cups with built in straws.
The other ones, the First Years that are tossables, yes, they definitely are BPA free.
