Okay to try soy milk for 14 month old?
« on: April 09, 2009, 23:32:58 pm »
MY DD is 14 months old and has been a cranky girl for about , oh, (feels like forever) a couple of months. The last two weeks she has been horribly constipated (cannot pass stools herself, needs assistance, yuck).

The crankiness started about 6-7 weeks ago when she had a cold. Then she cut her two bottom pre-molars and then I gave her Advil which is constipating so I figured that she was all mixed up because of these things. Also, she has been sooooo picky about what she is eating. It's doesn't seem like she's eating anything some meals.  But now I wonder if all this crankiness started about the same time she was switching to cow's milk all the time.

I did a bit of googling and discovered that cows milk can be really constipating and some children just don't tolerate it well. So, I was wondering if it was okay to try soy milk for a while to see if cow's milk is the culprit?

Thanks!

Julie

I am pretty sure it is fine to put a lo on soy milk.  A friend of mine has a son that had the same problem, and he drank soy milk from around 12 months until he was 2.  He now tolerates cows milk, but he did fine on the soy.  Check with your Dr., but I am pretty sure it is ok.  Teething can be tricky, and they will not eat as well when teething, and it usually comes and goes.

Good luck!!

Just been and had a read of my DD's soya milk carton and it say's not sutable for under 2's. I would speak to your doctor or HV about cow's milk making DD constipated they might be able to give you better advice on what alernative to us. Rice milk is OK from reading that carton and it has a more pleasant taste to it aswell

I can't have diary or soy at the moment and am currently having oat milk, which sounds gross but is actually yummy. It's called Oatly and they have a website. Just another alternative, depending on what your doc says

Just been and had a read of my DD's soya milk carton and it say's not sutable for under 2's.

I'm just wondering if this is because of the lower fat content in soy milk.  Even semi-skimmed (ie/ 2%) milk here in England states on the carton that it is not suitable for children under 2, and that is because they should be drinking whole milk for the extra fat.    Because if it is only due to the fat content, then you just need to ensure that you are finding other ways of boosting the needed fats into LO's diet - many moms use coconut milk for instance.  Rice milk has very very very little fat, and you definitely need to supplement fats and calcium if you are using that as your LO's main drink.    I'd re-post your question over on food allergies and see what the moms over there say, as there is lots of experience with both amongst the ladies over there.

Just a thought!

Thanks ladies!

I took my DD to the walk in clinic today and the doctor said to keep giving her milk because it shouldn't constipate her. And anyway, she's been off dairy since Thursday and no change in her hard poo. She said to go back to dairy for now.

So, I'm back to that for now and hopefully things improve. If not, then I'm going back to the family doctor.

THanks again.
