Holding own bottle?
« on: April 14, 2009, 12:56:06 pm »
I know this is really silly but at what age do babies hold their own bottle and drink it all properly? And is it a matter of practice, teaching them, showing them, or waiting for it to happen eventually? TIA

Oooh, good question.  I'll be interested to find out what others have experienced. :)

Sophie didn't hold her bottle. Ever. She would hold a sippy of water just fine, but bottles, nope. It's like she was thinking "aaah, a nice bottle, I will just lay here and let mummy do all the work"
We stopped with the bottles completely at around 14mo and then she carried on holding a sippy fine.
Alex - well, Mr Grabby tries to grab everything he can see, including swiping at the bottle, which has flown across the room countless times as a result  ::) So I think he'll be wanting to hold it at some point....

Kids..  ::)

interesting that you posted this question...was just wondering the SAME thing this morning!!! I still tuck Hunter's arm behind me and hold his other hand otherwise he's grabbing at the bottle, swats at it.  When he's done eating I let him hold it and put it in his mouth but he can't hold it there to feed  ::)

dd2 is bf'ed so I haven't really given her a full bottle feed, but I have had to give her Gaviscon in a bottle after every feed for a while and she started holding it and drinking at about 7 months - she doesn't do very well with it if she is not very hungry, but if she is actually eating properly she can manage on her own.

My DS never held his own bottle, and my DD did it around 12 months.  She was not happy about doing it at first, but she wanted her bottle and I did not have a spare pare of hands.  She eventually drank it and has held it ever since.

LOL isn't it interesting how different every baby is! Ive been trying to let Wes hold his bottle but he prefers to play with his toes ::) Still, he'll hold it for a few seconds. They get so easily distracted though! As soon as he looks somewhere else, he loses concentration and the bottle falls out lol. Oh well, i guess i'll just keep trying. Thanks girls :)

My Ds is in the thumping club. I tuck one arm around my back (its hard enough with one free thanks) and he swipes at it, scratches it, thumps the end of it, whirls his arm around, grabs my hair and his glasses. In fact I'm not sure I'll ever get him to hold it and drink - he's far to busy causing general chaos.

My DS holds his bottle himself but is not strong enough to hold it UP to get the milk out. He has started swatting my hands away as in wanting to do it himself but then gets frustrated as he is sitting with a bottle of milk between his legs, straight up in the air and nothing coming out no matter how hard he sucks ::)
