Prunes!!
« on: April 17, 2009, 19:21:22 pm »
I've read that prunes can be a great way of easing constipation - but have no idea what to do with them!!

Can I make a puree? Or are the skins too hard? What can I mix it with to make it slightly more palatable.

My DS is a fussy fussy eater. He likes pears  ::) :P.

I boil them for a few minutes, not too long, until they are plumper and floating.  Then I puree them with a few spoonfuls of the cooking water. I mix one ounce with an ounce of pureed dried apricots (cooked the same way) and an ounce or two of pear or plum puree.  And, often I just add a half ounce of the prune puree to whatever other breakfast puree DS is having.  He actually really likes the taste and it can help sweeten an apple of plum that is a bit sour.

I boil prunes with dried apricots and apples then puree it up.  Still pretty strong but both kids like/liked it.

So do I use dried prunes then? Or will the ones in juice out of the can do?? Could I just do the same with them?

I use dried. I've never actually seen them any other way, tbh?

Hi

I use dried prunes, boil them up and then add them to his baby porridge in the morning - he loves it.  I do the same with apricots, dates and raisons.

I freeze the purees - although they never seem to go very frozen!

Yup, I do what pp said - boil dried prunes & puree.  And it's true, they never really 'freeze', kinda remain really sticky and gummy!  But Tristan loves them, and I'd mix them with all sorts of other fruit.  One thing though, it's super sticky!  LOL  Usually I don't mind when he gets food in his hair and such, but that stuff's hard to wipe off!  ;)

Are apricots supposed to be good for constipation, too?

I just soak mine in a little water and then puree... i also always strain them as you can get bits of stone and gets rid of the skin.

Yes.  Frozen blueberries, peaches & pears also work for us.
