Starting solids...but wanting to make sure LO keeps bfing..
« on: April 20, 2009, 02:57:58 am »
Any tips on keeping a LO's interest in bfing even after starting solids?

My LO is just about 6 mos old and we started her on rice cereal yesterday... I would really like to keep nursing until 18 mo+, and am wondering if there are any "guidelines" I can follow/look at as to how much food to introduce when...  Should I stick with just breakfast for now - adding veggies, fruit, etc, to just that "meal"?  Or is there a # of oz I should go with... spreading that out throughout the day, so that she can have 3 "meals"?

Also - how does water play into this... I gave her a sippy cup today with water, and she loooooved playing with it.. I don't think she actually got any water, but I'm thinking that if I keep giving it to her, she'll get the hang of it soon.  Is that something I should worry about as far as filling her up, too?

Just really, really don't want her interest - and my supply - to drop off too soon...

Thanks!

Best way to keep her interested in bm and keeping your supply up is by offering bm first and foremost.  Don't rush into increasing the solids too quickly.  Just go slowly.  For now, just stay with one meal and slowly increase another meal.  Again follow her lead in how much she will take.  Have you considered BLW?  It's a natural way to introduce solids while letting the los control how much they will/can eat (developmentally).

ETA  With regards to the water, there's really no need to offer water as bm should be enough to quench her thirst.  However it's fine to have an oz or two so that she will get familiar with the sippy.
