Sleepy Bottle Fed Baby
« on: April 28, 2009, 17:01:44 pm »
I have a 2 week old baby boy, Jonah, who is super sleepy during his bottle feedings.  I've tried undressing him, rubbing his palms, up the plank on the back, massaging the cheek, releaseing the air from the bottle nipple, etc.. and he still is very sleepy.  Can anyone please provide me tips on how to wake a sleepy baby for his feeds.

Other info about Jonah: Birth weight: 6lbs 4oz  10 day weight: 6lbs 10oz - he's been on E.A.S.Y. since we brought him home from the hospital at 3 days old but is very very sleepy.

Thank you so much!  :)

Welcome to the BW website.  Congrats on the birth of your DS ;D

It is not uncommon for a lo that young to be very sleepy when feeding.  Feeding is hard work for them at this age, and it tires them out very quickly.  My DD was exactly the same, and I battled to keep her awake while feeding.  What I did when I noticed that she was starting to drift off to sleep was, stop the feed and wind her, then put the bottle back in her mouth.  This roused her enough to drink some more, until she started to fall asleep again, and I did the same.

They do grow out of it, but he is so young still, so would not worry too much about it, as long as he his happy, healthy and gaining weight.

Can you post what your routine looks like, so that we can have a look at it?

E - how much
A - how long
S - how long

My ds was the same - he was always so sleepy. I just did the same as Paula and that would usually wake him up for a bit longer.

Congrats on your new baby boy!

Hi there -- when you say, "wind" do you mean a "burp"?  Thanks for the tip!

Here's his routine as of now:
2am - 3am: 2- 3oz - no awake time
5am - 6am: 2-3oz - no awake time
8am: 2-3oz only awake to eat
11am: 2-3oz may be awake for 15-20 minutes but varies
2pm: 2-3oz may be awake for 15-20 minutes but varies
5pm: 2-3oz has been staying up until 7 last couple of days but may lie quietly in crib
7pm: 2-3oz off to bed
10:30pm: 2-3oz Dream feed

Hopefully by 6 weeks we'll lose the 2-3am feeding and have more awake time but right now he is just so sleepy and happy to sleep all night too -- he doesn't even try to be awake at night.  Does this seem ok?

Yes, burp him when you see him starting to fall asleep, this should help to wake him up a bit.

How long is his A time and how long does he nap for?

his A time is anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour on average -- two days in a row he went a couple of hours between the 5pm and 7pm feed (though he took a nap yesterday between 5pm and 7pm).

He is a VERY VERY sleepy kid.  Today he has only had A time after his 8am feeding and then the 11am and 2pm he zonked right back out.  He is only 2 weeks and 2 days and is sleeping at night with no A time after the 2-3am & 5am feedings.

My daughter was also very sleepy but her story was quite different.  My mother-in-law says my husband was quite sleepy too so I think I just have to wait until he gets bigger and more mature.  My daughter woke up around 2 1/2 months but she was smaller so I'm hoping Jonah will wake up around 6 weeks.

Thanks by the way for replying to me and helping me out -- reading these message boards and your help has been a life saver! :)

It is very common for them to be so sleepy.  Sounds like your lo is doing fantastically.

Keep us posted on how things go  :-*

Hi all --

Sorry for not getting back to you and showing you my gratitude for all of your help.  BUT...after these posts, it all hit the fan for us and I thought a sleepy baby was my problem?  Nope - Lactose Intolerant, Reflux, and Intestinal/Gass issues.  I spend more time on the colic/reflux, etc... board now.

Thanks again -- I really appreciated your help at the time! :)

hi all --

I am now fondly remembering those sleepy days --- because I think my LO has dysphagia.  He really only eats now when he is sleepy.  I'm hoping we can get to the bottom of this next week. My peds office is very receptive - even when I'm in there every week! :)

Thanks for your support -- I truly appreciate it!
