Bottle in the night!6 weeks old
« on: May 13, 2009, 14:29:57 pm »
My DS goes to sleep around 8 every night after his bottle and bath takes me an hour to get him down!!!

Well I give him a DF at 10.30 and sometimes he only takes around 2-3 ounces, he wakes at around 1.00am and4.00am the thing is, last night I held him off till 2.15 by giving him the dummy and then he woke at 5.45 for his next feed.

Do you think the second way is best as sometimes I feel like he doesnt want feeding he just wakes automatically? and sometimes he doesnt take much formula in the middle of the night he falls back to sellp?

Thanks

Jade

Honestly, at 6 weeks old I would just feed when he wakes, keep the room v. dark and v. quiet, minimum disruption, and get him back to sleep as quickly as possible.

Agree with Anna.  At 6 weeks most babies are still getting up at least 2x for a feeding.  So for now, I would continue to feed, just no interaction, do not turn on the light etc.

my lo is 6wo. She used to do 6 hours a night due to exhaustion i think as she never slept from 7 til 10 at night! Once i started EASY she started to wake at 2 and 5.30 in the night. I feel a bit hard done by but would rather she was going to bed at 7 and sleeping, than being awake. After all it is more about the health of my lo, than me getting an extra hours sleep.

I am sure our lo's will reduce thw NW soon. She also just started her 6wk GS so is feeding every 2hrs at mo!

Considering your previous post about how well he's gaining weight I would say that if he will go back to sleep with a paci then he's not really needing the calories during the night.  A trully hungry baby wont settle during the night with a paci.  This may help slow down his weight gain a little without cutting out his daytime calories.

Just my opinion though.

southernbelle that was my idea with him eating so much

adaias mom, if you lo gets up at 2 and 5.30am, what time was her bottle before that? Dreamfeed or normal bottle feed???

My lo is a restless sleeper thats why i didnt know weather to feed him and as you here and read so many peoples lo's are sleeping through at 8 wks!!!!!!!!

I think that the babies who are sleeping through at 8 weeks are definitely the exception rather than the rule! By all means settle him with a paci when he wakes, but if he wakes again soon after then you are actually winding up with more night wakings, not less.

Yes I know what you mean anna, I am a first time mummy and havent a clue about the average age for sleeping through the night so 2 x night wakings seems ok?? It can sometimes be 1 4 and 6.30 is this ok? How would I go abbout starting my day at 7 then though

I normall DF at 10, or she wakes for a feed anyway about 11. She used to sleep from 10 til 4.30 then again til 7 but that went out the window with EASY and the GS, so just going to wait until the GS passes and then see how we get on. As for sleeping through, i have alot of friends with newborns and only 1 who is 10 weeks does more than 5 - 6 hours in the night. I am not too worried about the NWs but am secretly hoping it goes back to 1 once the GS is over.

She has fed every 2 hours all day today, so its been, eat, nappy sleep, eat nappy sleep. Boring huh! :(

Starting the day at 6.30 is pretty much normal too, will he go back to sleep if you feed him and treat it as a night feed? My LO didn't sleep through til 7 months! Hopefully yours will do so much earlier ;) Yeh, 2 night wakings is very normal and to be expected. I'd probably look to start having him go a bit longer between night feeds (say 4 hours) at about 10-12 weeks, if he isn't doing it already by himself by then.
