17 month old...milk from a bottle or sippy cup?
« on: May 13, 2009, 19:59:44 pm »
Hey There

Our 17 month old is still drinking 8oz from a bottle in the morning and before bed and a 5-6 oz bottle before her nap.  (usually taken on her own in her crib)

When would you suggest she wean from the bottle and start drinking from a sippy cup?  She drinks water from her sippy but not that much.  I realize the milk before bed is not following the EASY routine however at about 10 months we started offering her milk before her naps and she napped wonderfully from then on.  It may throw her off now if I start putting her down without milk but perhaps its time or is it??

Thanks
Natasha

I wouldn't worry about her drinking milk before sleep at her age, but I would definitely switch to a sippy and ditch the bottles! You can do it cold turkey, or you could choose one of the times and offer a sippy then, and then once she gets used to it do the same for the other sleep.

I agree- time to ditch the bottles- sippy or straw cups are good!

Thank you for both your replies.  I will try to do it cold turkey with her nap tomorrow and see what happens.

Falling asleep with a bottle is a MAJOR cause of bottle rot (tooth decay) in infants.  I strongly suggest not letting your LO fall asleep with a bottle.  Feed her before bed and brush her little teeth to protect her little smile.

Hi There

I'm just following up on the sippy cup situation.  She had terrible tantrums last month when I offered her a sippy instead of her bottle.  She wakes up in the morning and asks for it herself and before bedtimes as well.  Please know that I have never left a bottle in her crib while she is asleep, she only drinks in her crib in the morning.  Before nap and bedtime we offer it to her outside of her crib and are trying to offer it now before brushing teeth.  (not so easy all the time)  She is refusing the sippy cup with milk but will take it with water occasionally.

Not sure what to do about that...I'm hoping she will become less interested in it as I give her less milk and more solids??

Thanks
Natasha

Going to be really cheeky and jump in on this one as I've been wondering the same thing myself lately...

My lo still has milk in the morning and at bedtime from a bottle. She has recently increased both, AM 7/8oz in the morning & can often ask for "more" (we don't so that it doesn't interfere with brekkie). Then she has a 8/9oz bottle while watching ITNG, then goes upstairs brushes her teeth, has a bath, then wd routine before bed.

I can understand why you'd have to transition from a bottle to sippy cup if they go to sleep with their milk but was wondering whether i needed to transition at all as this isn't the case for us??

Thanks :)

Hi I want to ask a question too - if that is ok - sorry for hijacking the post :)
If you move them from a bottle to a sippy are you not just moving the habit on to a different device.
My lo has a bottle in the am and in the pm before bed.
He drinks water all day long from a sippy cup.
He sucks on the bottle for about 8 minutes a day, I hold the bottle and it has never entered his cot.
So I suppose I am looking for the reasoning behind why you would move on to a sippy cup.
Thanks
Amy

We dropped the bottle around 20 months.  We went to Grandma's house 5 hours away the same day we stopped bottles.  He asked for the bottle during the drive once or twice than fell asleep.  Stayed a week and didn't once ask for bottle.  Came home and first thing he did was go to where we keep the bottles and they were gone of course and he had a fit.  And that was it.  Didn't ask for a bottle again after that.  Still won't drink milk from a sippy or straw cup or open cup.  He will however drink kefir so we do that instead of milk.  Costs MORE which is annoying but I figure we will keep trying the milk and hoping he will take it someday.

My 2cents/pence: DS BF'd until 19 months.  He loathed the bottle until almost 7 months. When he finally would take it, we still had to hold it for him until almost 18 months old! He could drink from a sippy/straw cup (water) at only 6 months.  An open cup of water at 9 months. Eat with a spoon and fork at 1yr.  BUT his milk was in a boob or bottle form only!  After BF ended he still had to have that bottle for his milk. This lasted until.... ummmm 3 years old!  DH and I were stressed at first and tried to take it away then it was so hard and it was his only vice and he LOVED his bottle.  We looked at each other and were like, why not? He only took it 1x a day after dinner or late in the afternoon. (was 2x a day at 2yrs) and we always brushed teeth after and of course he never walked around with a bottle or slept with it in his life.  So we relaxed about it.

He could eat and drink independently so no worries there, we knew he would stop on his own time and he did at 3 years 3 months. He now drinks his milk from a tea mug and doesn't really drink a lot of it anymore.  He is a very good eater as well btw and always was. I think that is important too, so they are not filling up on fast flow bottles and then not eating well, then we would of been more concerned kwim? Our experience, hope it helps.

Well i took the plunge and stopped the morning bottle. He has a big bowl of cereal with loads of milk in it, I offered him milk in a sippy cup but he didn't want it. So that is that - however bed time is a whole other story he LOVES that bottle and knows and says bath, bottle bed so I think that will be around for a while yet!
He can eat independently with both spoon and fork - but I still have to hold the bottle - however will drink endless cups of water all day (we live in the desert!)
I don't have a problem with the night bottle - he never walks around with it, he gets it when he has his pj's on sitting on my lap in his room then I put him into bed.
they are only young once and if this is his only vice then I consider myself lucky :)
