Cows milk not as filling????
« on: May 14, 2009, 07:40:33 am »
Hi there,

I switched DS to cows milk just over a week ago when he turned one and he has no problems taking it but we have been having sleep issues since then and I am wondering if maybe the milk is not filling him up as much.

He is a big baby, 26lb 6ozs , and has 8oz in am and 9oz at bedtime but since the switch he has been waking up during the night, fairly easy to settle again but then wakes crying at 6.30am( I used to wake at 7am) and will not stop until he gets his milk. I have then noticed that he needs his breakfast earlier than he did too.

Could the milk be the issue? I am thinking of going back to Aptamil 3 or even going for a growing up type???

Any thoughts TIA

Can you try increasing his solid foods rather than changing milk? You could try giving supper before bed and see if that sees him longer through the night.  I dont think there is much calorie difference between formula and cows milk so it could be unrelated to the milk.  He may even be having a growth spurt or something is going on developmentally as they can cause sleep disturbances too.

Hi there

My SIL found exactly the same thing.  She actually went back to formula and it stopped the NWs.  Then she gradually weaned to cow's milk by the time he was 18 months.  I know formula is much more nutrient enriched than cows milk but not sure about calories.

How about switching back for a few nights?  If he still keeps wakening then you'll know its probably a growth spurt,  if not well then maybe its filling him better.   From your description he does sound hungry to me!

Hi there,

Thanks for the replies....I went ahead and bought some Aptamil Growing Up milk for 1yr+ and will try that at bedtime. I will carry on with cows milk in the am as he has breakfast soon after so thats fine.

He does have his supper before bed and then still drinks 9oz's easily , so I think it may be the cows milk rather than not enough solids but we'll see what happens.....

Thanks

Hope you don't mind, I am going to pop this post over to Eating for Toddlers.

At the age of 1, lo's do go through quite a big growth spurt.  We found that when we switched to cows milk we too had major night wakings due to hunger.

We left DD on formula for a few weeks and then tried weaning again.

Just a thought.
