DS weaning dreamfeed @ 3 wks!
« on: July 01, 2009, 12:37:52 pm »
Okay-first you should know, he weighed 9.7 when he was born and now weighs 10. 13 as of this morning, so he's feeding well and growing. (btw, no problems during the day.) Our problem is the bottle of breastmilk we give him for the dreamfeed--he has cut back from drinking 3-4 oz down to 1 oz. Also, when he wakes up for the first feed, he doesn't drink much then either, then wakes up for his second feed and takes 2 oz of breastmilk in a bottle.

At first, we tried moving back his dreamfeed from 10 to 10:50-55. That worked for a night or two, then he went back to drinking less. He wakes up around 1:30 for the first feed of the night, then 4- 4:15 for the second, and begins the day at 7 with a decent feed--don't know if I'd call it a full feed but definitely more than the last three.

He is essentially three weeks and 3 days old. Is it possible that he is physiologically ready to drop the second feed but has chosen to lessen the amounts of all the others?? If so, how do I encourage two full feeds and dropping the second feed of the night?

Have you tried not doing the DF at all?  He might be good without it! 10 lbs seemed to be a magic # for us and STTN. However, I had twins so they were peanuts and didn't make it to 10 lbs for a while! But I would say skip the DF and see what happens? It doesn't hurt to try! If he is only taking an Oz and then not taking much at his first feed of the day, it sounds like he doesn't need/want it. I would feed him before bed. Maybe even cluster feed (if you think you need to tank him up- but he is a great weight!) And then let him go until he wakes on his own to eat! Let me know what you decide :)

I never thought of dropping it, but it sounds like something worth a try. Thanks for the idea!!

I've never been able to get my boys to take a DF.  So I have no advice for you.  :-\
But seeing as how your DF is a bottle I'm going to lock this thread and link it to the one you have on bottlefeeding.  Good luck!
