Hives caused by milk
« on: July 03, 2009, 07:05:50 am »
My DD is 7.5 months and started solids at 6 months. She developed a rash on her chin, neck & cheeks. The doctor just keeps saying its eczema and that its caused by drool. But drool doesn't get on her cheeks - food does. The other day I added a little cows milk to her cereal and she immediately came up in hives (looked like a severe nettle rash) on her face, neck & arms, where the cereal had touched. I took her to the doctors but she just said 'try soy milk'. (Getting information out of doctors here is like getting blood from a stone)
I'm now very confused about what exactly this may be - lactose intollerance, cows milk allergy...? She had no other symptoms. I don't know what else I should avoid. Where should I start with this?
Any advice would be great. Thank you.

If it is a rash that would point more towards milk allergy or milk intolerance.  Trying the soy next would definitely be the next step to see if she has a similar reaction.  If she does she could be milk/soy allergic/intolerant, which is very common in babies.  If she has the same reaction I would get back in with your doctor and demand/request to see an allergist.  Perhaps even take pictures of her rash at its worse so they can see and understand what you are talking about.  If it is an instant rash that screams more of an allergy to me, as most allergic reactions are immediate.  Perhaps when you go to the doctor about it bring some milk and put it on her skin so they can see for themselves if they don't believe you.  Definitely try the soy though and see what happens.  Hope it works out for you, let us know.  :)

Thanks. I've bought some soy milk and I'll try that tomorrow. If its a milk allergy / milk intolerance does this include other diary products such as cheese & butter etc.? She had eaten yogurt previously without any reaction but I tried a bit again after the milk episode and the rash / white lumps came up again...

If it's an allergy even the tiniest amount can set them off, so any dairy product could do it.  If it is an intolerance she MAY be able to tolerate small amounts, or weaker amounts like the cheese or yogurt, but if you're saying she is now getting a rash from it then it could be getting worse.  I know with my son the eczema didn't start until he was about 2-3 months and his symptoms got worse and worse until I took him off it completely.  About 6 months later I tried again and he had tiny eczema, but that was it, so I continued giving him the dairy.  Now, 3 months later, he doesn't get eczema at all, and no other symptoms.  He loves his milk and yogurt now!  It's like he needed time away from it for a while for him to get into a good spot where he could handle it.  I know other babies have it worse though and need to stay off it completely for longer.  But it's severity can definitely worsen over time.  Let us know how the soy goes, I'm really curious. :)

I put some soy milk on her arm and nothing happened. I put a tiny bit of cows milk on the other arm as a control and that broke out in minutes. Tomorrow morning I'll put a little soy milk in her breakfast cereal along with my breast milk - like I did with the cows milk. I'll let you know how that goes. Thanks.
