Going to formula, have some questions
« on: July 06, 2009, 17:50:37 pm »
My little guy is turning 6 months and we have decided to wean him to formula.  I would like to also introduce a sippy cup as it is  as good  a time as any.  He is also not on solids yet.

Should I finish weaning using a bottle and then start with the sippy cups at meals?

Should I just start right away with a sippy cup?  I doubt he can use a sippy cup to get enough nutrition yet.

Can I start solids yet, or is it better to wait until he is completely weaned?

He is only taking one bottle now and today was the first time he didn't fight me but he only took 5 oz.  I have ALOT of milk and he is 19.5 lbs, I don't think that is all he can take.  What should the average baby consume at this age?

I know these are alot of questions, thanks in advance for sharing your experiences/opinions!

Hi greenteamomma, when I started introducing sippy cup to my dd she ended up spilling most of it and it took 5 different sippy cups to find the one that worked for her, so I would suggest weaning using a bottle and then start with the sippy cup.

In regard to solids u r the only one who would really know, as no one knows ur lo better than u. Is he good with change? The only two things I would be weary about is taking on too much at the same time and overwhelming both of u, and being able to determine if any constipation/wind/etc is due to solids or formula.

hope this helps

I would continue to give formula/milk from the bottle and use the sippy cup with some water at meal times.  At 6 months, the sippy cup is really just for practice.  You want to make sure that your LO is getting enough formula, which means that the bottle is your most likely means of success.  It took us four months and about ten different kinds of sippy cups before we found one that E will drink out of.  We stopped teh bottle cold turkey the day after his birthday, so I used the few months before as trial and error to find what would work for him.

Hi,

I did combined BF and FF for both my kids from about 6 weeks old, but when it came time to fully wean, I started my oldest on a sippy at 5.5 months and she loved it, never used a bottle again. However with Spencer we had the same issues pp mentioned in finding the right kind of cup, the nuby soft spout was the best one for her.

For the solids, since it is more for practice and fun at this age could you introduce things like pears, prunes etc that would help keep things moving as it were? (Formula really constipated Spencer, we did a daily dose of prunes mixed with banana)

Oh, and he is the same size as Spencer and for awhile she could pack away 8-9 oz in a feed (6-8 months old) but now she tops out at 7 oz per feed. We recently discovered too that she prefers the flavour of a different brand than we usually buy, so we switched and she drinks much more eagerly.

thanks all.  I have been giving the little guy his sippy cup in the late pm everyday and his eyes just light up when he takes it and then he takes a sip, cold from the fridge boiled water, and his eyes light up more.  He only takes a little but he gets really excited.  I will continue slowly.  We might start solids this weekend, he has tasted pear and loves it so I might just start with that a little and then go to rice cereal.
Also, I have discovered I have a high lipase problem and by trying my Bm that my milk goes sour and has ALL gone sour so I am pumping as I go now....keeps me quite busy!  I'm so sad...so much work gone down the drain literally :(
Darn breast milk, I have had sooo many problems with breastfeeding......but it was for him so I don't mind!

Well in fairness stopping BF is a real emotional thing, and may be it would be a good idea to keep going until u both feel its time?

When u say 'we have decided' what do u mean? Do u want to stop? R u ready? Ur lo is only 6 months and there is no guide book that says 6 months is time to wean, its ur decision.

If u r comfortable and happy with it and not due to go back to work u should keep goin. BM is better than formula. And even if u r goin back to work u can do the morning and evening feeds.

Sorry none of my business really, and u don't have to answer these questions jus for u to consider :) It jus sounds like u r not entirely happy with stopping BF.....

I think you read into my post more than what I was expressing but you were reading right.  I was having a hard EASY day....but I was also not wanting to stop completely with the BFing.  The dreamfeed was so gentle and calm lately and then the other times, he was so happy to bf.  He is becoming more expressive and I could see genuine happiness that he was getting it.  Then I felt sad that I was taking it away.  The reason we were decided to stop was because my LO has a tooth and was biting.  since I started giving him the bottle, he figured things out and isn't anymore and I am faster to remove myself before I get bit!  I think I will keep with the daily bottle, I have to have surgery in September anyway so he'll need to bottle feed for a few days but not stop completely for now.  thanks for the support and "listening"!

I'm glad u decided to keep goin. U should follow ur gut and do what makes u feel good and happy. :) And combined BF and Bottle give u great flexibility. ;)
