2yr old EW, sleep all over the place, please help
« on: July 07, 2009, 18:42:15 pm »
Hi,

My ds has just turned 2 and for a long while he was sleeping 11.5hrs at night with a 1-1.5 hr nap, old routine was like this -

6.30ish wake

12-1.30 nap

7.00 bed

Now its more like this -

5.10-5.40ish wake

nap between 10.30 and 12pm for 1-1.5hrs

7.00 bed

Except!!!! Sometimes when he goes bed he is not going asleep until 8-9pm ish and still waking very early, he then wants a earlier nap for longer, bed between 6.30 and 7pm sometimes asleep straightaway other times not for hr or so  ??? wake up is still the same. Very rarely he will sleep til 6.30am ish!!

Now, on some days he wont have a nap or wont want one until 2pm ish which is too late as he then wont sleep again, EW same cycle  :(  On the days he sleeps 11.5hrs of a night he either wont have a nap or wants a late one as mentioned above.

I have to admit im at the end of my tether as as well as all this sleep issues he has become VERY possessive of me and cries constantly if other children are near me, come to our house etc

Please, Please any advice will be soooooooo appreciated

TIA

Vikki x

Okay- so he did fairly well last night- good!
Any early sunlight coming in and waking him up? We've got blackouts on his windows in the summer.
Any bladder/bowel awareness that could be waking him? Nick's showing awareness of needing the potty early in the am and at bedtime.
Just brainstorming!
Any changes in the household, activities, holidays...

Hi

TBH, we moved house 2 weeks ago but he has been EW for a good ew months, I think its habit especially as dh told me ds actually woke 5.30 this morn not 6.15ish as I thought  ::)

Trouble is if he would sleep the 12 hour min at night he wouldnt need a nap as he has proven this. He did poo early today instead of his usual sometime in the am, his nappy is dry until nearer his wake time now tho and sometimes its bulging lo, and others maybe 1 wee in it.

He has blackout curtains which are not all that good but better than anything else!!

Im thinking of putting bedtime at 7.30 with l8r nap or slightly longer nap if I can, what do you think?

Thanks for your ideas its very helpful x

I think it's worth a try- remember it takes a few days to see if a new sleep pattern can emerge-
Could be some lingering teething/new house qualms altogether, and if so, hopefully it will pass soon...
Good luck!

Lewismummy our lo's must be related because we had similar issues earlier and here we are again.  My dd is waking early, anywhere from 5am to 6am ( her usual wake up was about 6:30).  Then she naps at 11am and falls asleep easily but the naps last only one hour some days and other days 2.5 hours (although this is rare).  In the past she was a consistent 2 hour napper except for teething and such. Bedtime is a nightmare.  She is staying up for about 7-8 hours after her afternoon nap.  We have consistently kept bedtime at about 5.5 hours after she wakes from her nap which generally fell around 6:30/7.  Now there is no rhyme or reason.  We have the same routine.  Nothing has really changed.  Her teeth are okay.  She is driving us nuts.  I just don't know what to do anymore.  She always looks tired and is crankier. She will rub her eyes at 6pm and I put her to bed after our routine and she still stays up in her crib for another 2-3 hours.  I am quickly losing my patience.

God its sooo hard isnt it!!!

yesterday ds was awake 5.30 apparently, nap 12.30 - 1.40, put him bed 7.15 (to try slightly l8r bedtime) and he would not go asleep til 8.25  ::), he was laughing and running round his room which I found incredably frustrating being laughed at and really wanted to smack his mouth but obviuosly didnt  :-[

Then he woke for his dummy 4.30am, slept til 6.50am!!!

Today he is not having a nap as he is so hyper right now as I type and early bed, as we have a wedding and a birthday party one after the other tomorrow  :o

Lumlumsmom, i remember we have similar issues in the past, lets hope we can both sort this out before I really lose my rag x x

good grief, you're not alone- Nick's sleep was NUTS today!!!
Must be something in the air??
Woke at 6:30AM
slept in car 5 mins at 10:45AM- (that's probably what threw him...)
SOBBED and was cuckoo at nap time- hyper etc didn't nap till 3:00PM
I woke him at 4:20...
That means bedtime will probably be 9PM! Ugh.
At least it's a gorgeous day, and I'm going to play outside with him to try and wear him out for the night!!
hugs girls, you're so not alone!!

How much A time should a 2 year old have between sleep times?
Mine does 5.5 hours in the AM, and 5-6 in the PM

ladies,, a few people on here have forced both nap time and bedtime half hour later and that can sometimes solve the EW. It can work if they they are not already OT.    It worked for us when DS was 26 months old, he now has a consistent bedtime of 7:45pm and wake-up between 6am and 7am (usually 6:30am)  and nap time 12:30 ish for 1.5 - 2 hours.

Hi

Just wanted to send hugs to you all, wish I could offer advice but I too am having sleep problems with my DS who is 2 so know exactly how frustrated you're feeling. My LO plays in his cot for 1 and 1/2 hours most nights before going to sleep and then is up early the next day :-( Wish I knew the answers to share with you all, but just wanted to offer my hugs and say hopefully it will pass soon. Moving bedtime 15 minutes later for a few days to see what happens sounds good and then if no improvement you could try moving it back 1/2 hour so that it's 15 minutes earlier than before ?

Good luck - hope you find the answers

Well ladies, last night ds was in bed 7pm v tired, didnt fall asleep til bout 8.15 then woke around 4am as I think he had a nightmare cause wouldnt settle for half hr  :(, he then slept til 7.20am  ;D

Today due to the later wake up, ds didnt nap til 2.30 for 45 mins, we hav had a very busy day - a wedding then a birthday party straight after, so ds is currently in bed as he was pulling his ears and stroking my arm (his classic im pooped signs) but is talking to himself so will have to see what happens!!

He generally has 6hrs A time after wake up and used to have 5.5hrs after a nap but this is wonky now due to his erratic sleep pattern.

Hugs and good luck to us all eh!!  ;D

Hugs- and arrrghh!!!
MOLARS are here!! Hooray for the last batch of teeth! 2nd year molars- first one is popping it's ugly little points...
sooooooooo
yesterday was like this:
Wake at 7AM
Nap: 10:45AM-12:50 (!!??!?!?!?!odd isn't it!!!)
Bedtime:8PM (after motrin and a small bit of melatonin and rocking and books and potty)
NW at 11:45PM - incoherently shouting about a woodchuck in the yard, and telling it to "get out get out get out"
EW at 4:50AM- DH dealt with it by rocking, motrin, and putting him back to bed while drowsy- DH dropped to the floor and crawled out of his room- haven't done the commando style crawl in ages, LOL- Golly, I love that man!!
WOKE him at 8AM-
LOVE molars, don't you?
