10 month old early waking - need to tweak routine???
« on: July 18, 2009, 11:52:32 am »
Hi, we finally got our 10 month old back on track which has gone pretty well so far. She has been sleeping through the night for the past week (yeah) but her mornings have been getting earlier and earlier ever since (first 6:30 and each day earlier until this morning at 4:45). She was waking contentedly first, which soon turned to tired cries - now she just wakes tired and crying. I've had some mild success getting her to go back to sleep usually for another 45 mins, but often it's a lengthy process and is fitful. This morning I caved after 30 mins and bf'd her, which she grateful for and went back to sleep contentedly for another 45 mins. So, it leads me to wonder does she need a routine tweaking or is it a feeding issue? The following is her general day:

6:30 wake and bf
7:30 breakfast of cheerios, fruit and a tbsp of infant cereal (had to cut way back on this stuff because it was constipating her so much, but she's a good finger food eater thankfully)
9:45/10 nap (goes down with a whine or two, nothing serious)
11:00 wake and bf
12:00 lunch of toast, veggies, cheese or yogart and something high protein
2:45 nap (a little fussier to settle than the am, but she is still getting used to this nap - this is the one we always struggled with)
4:00 wake and bf
5:30 supper of meat, veggies, fruit
6:45 bath, bf and asleep by 7:30 fairly contentedly (sometimes in bed by 7:00 if she's had a poor nap day)

She is generally a good eater and is still bfing pretty contentedly (not really showing any signs of self-weaning yet). She's also cutting another tooth, but I really don't think that's the problem as that hasn't really bothered her much in the past. Should I shorten her naps or am I missing something else?

Thanks, Steph

Hi Steph.  Not sure that I can give any particularly useful advice, but we are in a very similar position with our 11-month-old.  She has been sleeping till 5 consistently for a few weeks now and used to go back to sleep until 6 with a feed and a cuddle, but the last couple of weeks has been waking at about 4.45 and not going back to sleep.  This week we managed a couple of days of 5.45 (one of those she woke a lot earlier but we left her because she wasn't unhappy), but the back end of this week the wakings have been getting earlier again.  She is definitely teething (the 2 days in the last 3 months that she hasn't been teething she slept straight through till 6) which I think is causing some issues - she's been pretty grumpy during the day as well, which is very unusual.

We have about the same amount of daytime sleep - which could be wrong!  ;D - so that doesn't leap out at me as a problem.  The only thing I have been wondering about with mine is whether it is OT - dd1's EWs have always been caused by OT.

Hope things get better for you soon.

i feel for you both.  I don't have advice for you because I only have an 8 month old DS.  But I read that at certain point, two naps need to become one and waking early seems to be one of the signs.  Like I said, I have no experience with more than 8 months, and I also need help for early waking.

hugzzz for you

Hi Steph

I hope that you have managed to sort everything out while the site has been down - we have now had 6 (!) STTN in a row (no doubt there won't be any more now!  ;)), so it doesn't seem to be a routine issue with us.  If you're still struggling then we can see if we can work it out together.
