White bread toast for 10mo?
« on: August 20, 2009, 06:41:26 am »
Hi we're going for a vacation next month. By that time DS will be 10 mo. We're staying in a hotel and he seems doesnt like ready made food in a jar. I wonder if white bread toast is ok for a 10mo. The hotel is serving continental breakfast. Need some idea for some easy on vacation food. Thx

Yes!  My DS loooooooooved it - most of the time just the bread, not toasted even!  He used to see a hospital dietician to help us manage his food allergies and she advised white bread over brown, or if we gave brown to not give it as often. Brown bread has so much more fibre that it just goes right through out the other end. Until LOs are 5 years old (I think 5, maybe it is 3 years old?) there should be more white starchy grains than brown, although brown is okay, just not all of the time.

Oh I  didn't know that about white v brown grains.  I always thought brown bread was the one to go for.  makes me feels less guilty about the white bread we use too!

My LO has had toast since about 7 months and loves it.  Bread with cream cheese is a big fav too.  Such an easy thing to eat when you're away!

Hi everyone, thanks a lot for the advice & ideas. I was too worry about the ingredients on a bread that may not approriate for his age. I gave him a tiny tiny amount several days back and he loves it so much. I would offer him for breakfast tommorow, Im sure he would be very happy :-). Shiv52, toast with cream cheese is a great idea, thanks. Can he have toast with strawberry jam ?

I kept away from strawberry jam because I was afraid of strawberry allergy, but tried a tiny bit once he turned one, and he was fine. So, I let DS have jam on bread or toast once or twice a week....although by "jam" I mean that I put the tiniest amount of it that you can imagine onto the bread and then scrape most of it off so that it is more like some red colouring on the bread!!

We have only had jam a few times- LO not that fussed.  We have had nutella on toast occasionally too and she loved it.  But like Mashi's jam, just the smallest amount!  Although i think I left that until after a year.

Yeah - you need quite a bit of water to carry the bulk through from the brown bread - so not the best if they are constipated. But Jacob does prefer it so I mix and match a bit  :).

My 8 mth old has white and brown toast with butter and fruit spread (jam but no sugar), cream cheese, peanut butter (no allergies in family)and mushroom pate - the kind that comes in a tube. He loves them all. Other good "on the go" food for us are bananas, rice cakes, malt loaf (like a dense fruit loaf) pots of fromage frais, cubes of cheese, cooked pasta shapes, dry cheerios (loves to play with them on his high chair tray!)
Hope this helps,
