how do i know its an allergy?
« on: August 20, 2009, 23:33:47 pm »
I gave my 7 month old mashed spud (hubby had accidentally put milk, marge and cheese in it) with silverbeet yesterday for lunch for the first time. last night he had a bit of an upset tummy and woke up a few times in the night. he has suspected CMPI, would an upset tummy be indicative of an allergy to any of the dairy products in teh mashed spud or would that reaction happen earlier in teh day seeing as he had it at lunch? could it just have been a coincidence? or perhaps it was the silverbeet? sheesh i dont know, i have more to give him today, should i give it to him again and see if it happens again?

It's hard to say, it is possible.  The best way to know for sure is try again with the spud, without the silverbeet, perhaps earlier in the day so if he does react it won't be at night again.  I would just try again and see what happens.  Hope that helps, sorry didn't get back to you earlier.  Did you try it again already?

If it is already suspected that he has milk intolerance, then probably, yes, it was the dairy causing an upset tummy. What is it that leads you to suspect he may have a milk intolerance....is it a previous reaction?

Oh its a long story but basically after refusing to eat at 3 months old and ending up in the hospital due to constant screaming they put thought he might have it and changed his formula and he came right so they dont know for sure.

Yesterday i gave him carrots (as i have done previously once or twice) and his face was stained orange where it had gone around his mouth (also the highchair tray was as well) he doesnt seem to like his carrots and rice much though. then last night i gave him minced up chicken with apple which he loves. Im not sure anymore whats causing what!

I was thinking what if i went back to just rice cereal for a few days to get everything out of his system and start all over again re introducing foods as i didnt do such a good job of it last time, just to see whats causing what. He does have very red cheeks (i dont think he is teething) and seems to have a slight bumpy rash around his mouth, he has had the bumpy rash for about a week now (i tried him on some store bought stuff and he loved it but that also stained around his mouth and that may have caused the rash around his mouth?? its not a huge rash, you can barely see it but I can see it, i know its there

Red cheeks can be a huge sign of a tummy ache - one thing I learned with DS's milk allergy.  SO, it could be that somethign has upset his tummy. I don't think it's a bad idea to cut back and start again from fresh where the solids are concerned.

Hi ladies, back again! yes it seems he had a reaction to the dairy, his cheeks got redder and redder and he looked like he was gonna start getting sores around his mouth, the skin around his chin etc seemed sooo irritated, so after going right back to only rice cereal and pears his cheeks calmed down after two days and hes back to normal and we are slowly reintroducing all his old faves again, just wanted to start all over again just in case i missed something this time. I also started giving him Soy yoghurt and he LOVES it, hes had it for breakfast or lunch everyday for about a week now and no reaction so thats a good sign. Pediatrician has booked him in for an allergy scratch test in a few months time.

He is, however, constipated, pediatrician said that wont be the allergies, what can i give him to help with that, something that wont interfere with his allergies?

Well it's good to hear that he gets to see an allergist.  Hope things work out for you in that regard.  About the constipation I'd try adding more high fibre fruit and/or veggies.  I used prune puree in the baby's cereal.

I boiled prunes for 2-3 minutes until they plumped up.  Did the same with dried apricots (natural, brown ones, not range ones that contain sulphides) and then mixed the two purees together - often with a bit of pear as well, for sweetening.
