HELP!!! I am going to go crazy!!
« on: September 02, 2009, 19:41:44 pm »
My LO has been waking during her naps every 10 minutes!! She is 6 weeks old today and has been gradually getting worse and worse with her naps sense 4.5 weeks old. Here is what happens each EAS cycle:

E - 8:00 -BF for about 15 minutes (always has and it used to get her through the 3 hours)

A  - I think this is where we are having trouble. She yawns almost constantly from the moment she gets up until she is cranky from needing to go to sleep. If I were to start her wind down routine at the first yawn after BF she would never have any awake time. I have her do tummy time, talk to her, sing to her, let her sit in the swing, or lay her down on her play mat. If she acts like she is tired of something I will move her to do something else, but I try not to overstimulate her. Usually after 30-45 minutes I start putting her down for her nap. Also the entire time she is awake she is trying to suck on everything, but doesn't usually want a paci. She likes sucking on my pinki, but I can't sit with her and allow that. This just started at 4.5 weeks and I thought it was a growth spurt but she never wants any extra food...it makes her really upset. She just wants something to suck on.

S - 9:00 - I take her into her darkened room, swaddle her (this is where she starts screaming), and sit in the glider with her on my shoulder/chest. I hum a song, and rock with her for a little while waiting for her to calm down. She is still trying to suck on everything during this and still usually doesn't want a paci. I have broken down and let her suck my pinki just to get the screaming to stop. When she does start to fall asleep I stand up to put her in her crib and as soon as I put her down she starts turning her head from side to side and sucking on her fist that sticks out the top of her swaddle. She is a stomach sleeper and can't sleep with her arms swaddled under her chest so we bend them up and the fists just barely clear the top of the blanket. For a few days I was able to pat her back and she would fall asleep and stay that way. Now she will start screaming and I have to start all over putting her back to sleep. Sometimes I can get her to take a paci and she stays asleep until it falls out then she starts turing her head and sucking on her fist. Now we are to the point that she is waking up every 10 minutes! If she stays asleep past the 10 minutes we are still lucky to get 45 minutes at a time.

She used to be such a good napper and last night this nap problem changed her night sleeping. She usually sleeps 6-10 hours at night, and last night she woke up after 4, ate and then slept another 4. At night she will eat, and go right back to sleep with minimal fussing and no waking up after 10 minutes. I know she is not getting enough sleep during the day, but I can't get her to stay asleep!!

Please HELP!!

I think you might need to try putting her down earlier or later.  I'd start with earlier first.  She might need to catch up on some sleep.  She might also like her 1st a time to be the shortest one.  My lo used to feed and go back to sleep for her 1st a time...and so did I lol.  I would try that.  Maybe 1st thing in the morning feed her quietly, change her nappy and try to put her down again.  See if it helps.

Well it turns out it was a quick fix! I decided to just try swaddling her with her arms down rather than sticking out the top of the blanket. I also cut her awake time down to only 35 minutes rather than almost 60. She immediately went to sleep and stayed that way for two solid hours. Then she got up, ate had awake time, and went right back to sleep with her arms swaddled down. Could it really be that simple?!?

We had another rough night with her waking up every 4 hours, but she is napping great again today (so far) so I am hoping tonight will be better. If not, I will consider getting more calories into her in case it is a growth spurt.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Funny, exactly the same problem here, down to the head-turning while in bed and no problems whatseoever sleeping at night!! Unfortunately, the swaddling doesnt change anything for us...groan groan..
