8 months: worried how little milk she drinks
« on: September 09, 2009, 18:34:46 pm »
evening everyone, i'd really appreciate some advice about how much milk catherine should be drinking at 8 months as she's seriously dropped her intake.
for ages now she's completely refused a bottle on waking. She has breakfast about 8 and i make it as milky as possible (4 oz). She has a bottle after her nap at about 11.30 but i can only get this one down her if i do it like a dreamfeed and catch her whil she's still sleepy (6 oz). then that's basically it for the day! she will not have anything later on. I've started giving her a little fruit snack about 3.30 and some water to keep her going til tea. She eats lots at teatime and has more milky porridge for afters (3 oz). She won't take a bottle at bedtime, she just wants to go into her cot and screams until i put her down. Until about a week ago she was having a dreamfeed but started rejecting this too. I had thought that stopping the DF would make her hungrier the following morning but no such luck.

So basically she is having one bottle a day, and getting about 14 oz with the milk put in her food. Is this enough? i;m completely out of ideas about how to get any more down her.

thanks evyeryone
anna :)

Hi Anna!

What size teat are you currently using for her?  Could she be ready for a faster flow?

Also, in the morning have you tried giving her a bottle right when she wakes?

I believe at 8 months, the Dr's (at least in the United States) recommend at least 22-26oz of formula.  That is at a minimum.

HTH!

hi judy thanks for your quick reply, i'm really worried now! She's on a number 4 teat which is the fastest flow you can get. i've tried her with it in the morning, she just won't put it in her mouth, struggles away from me. i got so fed up of making up feeds and pouring it straight away, it seemed such a waste. i'm going to try again with the morning feed tomorrow though i think, she does eat 4 solid meals a day and seems happy enough. i'll go and get her weighed tomorrow i think and talk to the health visitor.
thanks for your help
anna

Sorry Anna!!  I did not mean to worry you.  Remember that all babies are different.  As long as your lo is taking a decent amount of solids and is growing and gaining weight.  I would not worry too much.  See what the doctor says after her appt!!

Also, besides her formula, is she getting some other dairy?  You could always boost it with yogurt etc!

Let us know how the Dr. visit goes!

thanks all! saw the health visitor this afternoon and got catherine weighed. she's still on teh 75th centile which is where she's been since birth so she's obviously getting what she needs somehow! HV wasn't worried, just said to keep adding powder to her meals. thanks for all the advice
