Formula or Cow's Milk at One?
« on: September 10, 2009, 13:57:54 pm »
Hi,
My lo is coming up t0 1 yrs and I've heard mixed reports about putting him on cow's milk and switching from formula. Anybody have any thoughts?

Hiya
Mine is coming up for 1 too and I just switched her to cow's milk as I happened to run out of formula and didn't see the point in buying any more! My health visitor said it is best to switch to cow's milk. I think I might give her growing up milk once a week so I know she is getting the iron content...
Hope that helps! x

Just curious, what are the "mixed reports?"  I've always heard that at one, babies go onto cow's milk, never heard anything otherwise, so am curious.

Our ped. said no more formula after one....so we switched a lil early to cow's milk. (thinking it would take a bit but she did pretty well with it and we just switched fully after running out of formula and not purchasing any more as pp mentioned)

So funny how different doctors are. My girlfriend's dd is 11mo and her daughter recommended staying on formula until 2yo for the nutritional content!  :o  (btw, she's switching to cow's milk anyway, she said there was no way she was paying for formula for another year!)

It is so funny that they all say different things. Not sure why. I know people who have head to go to 2% rather than whole but we were told whole milk. Not sure why there is so much variance.

What is 2% milk? We don't have anything called that here.

J has just turned 1 and I am trying to decide what to do. He is a recovering MPI so don't know whether to move to soy milk or gives cows milk a go first.

Doesn't help that my doctor has just put his appointment back until he is 15 mths  >:(.

2% is the North American word for semi-skimmed.  Named so because it is 2% milk fat.

WOW! All v v interesting!
Mixed reports were from other mums from various HVs!! Some said keep them off cow's milk for longer, others said leave until 18 months, others said it was fine etc etc...Im sure you all get the idea!

The only time I have ever heard of staying on formula past 12 months is when LO has a milk allergy/intolerance and needs to stay on their hypoallergenic formula until they outgrow the milk allergy - which, if it doesn't happen at 12 months, often happens at 18 or 24 months.

It is very strange that you get told different things by different health professionals.

We were told not to switch to 2% until after a lo is 2 as they need all the fatty content of the whole milk.

With DD we are still on formula only because she has reflux and has a thickened formula.

Hi
I just started to switch our lo to whole fat milk this week, she'll drink anything, she's really not bother, in fact I think she is taking more milk now ::) I did it gradually, but only really casue I want to use up the formula.....

Advice here in Oz... Mostly say whole milk at 12 months, thou many parents use formula still. I think due to concerns about not getting the nutrients from food,if they are not eating well.... so hoping that the formula might help out there

semi-skimmed is a NO-NO here as far as I know ...as the bubs need the fat content etc....

My chld health nurse even said don't bother changing formulas htat the newborn one was fine till one! then whole fat milk...... I tend to disagree with that thou....
