13mo - when to drop another bottle?
« on: September 15, 2009, 13:00:49 pm »
Hi,
lo takes 2 bottles of about 200mls at brekki and bedtime.

She enjoys both, though leaves the bedtime one more often. so could probably reduce this one...but worried about NW's

Just wondering at what age you dropped to one bottle? Which one you dropped?
and at what age?
Should I be reducing the milk in each bottle? - she eats very little atm so am thinking that reducing the amount will increase general appetite!

She did drop the brekkie one to 150mls about a month ago but she seemed to want more again so I increased it back to 200mls  ::)

Any thoughts would be appreciated might help me make a decision ::)

Cheers,
Span

We are still doing breakfast and bedtime bottles of 240mLs each, most days he takes both, but listening in here to what others think/have done....maybe I am offering too much?!

Hi Mashi,
Good to "see" you here.... may be we'll both get a surprise ! I was getting concerned as Eva is eating less and less, today was ridiculous! I won't  bore you with the details though ::)

Hello Spanna,

At that age we were still doing 2 bottles.  We did however change to breakfast first and then offer the bottle after.

Are you still doing formula or have you switched to cows milk?  If you are still on formula, this could be why your lo is not eating a lot.  At this age food is their main source of nutrician, and their milk is more of a drink.

Hope you don't mind, but I am going to pop this over to eating for todlers.

why not transfer one of them into a lidded cup and then you kill 2 birds with one stone i.e. the milk is reduced and she gets used to taking milk in a cup. I would personally do the morning one first and offer a cup of milk along with breakfast.

Hi Paula,
Of course it's ok to move me  ;)

We are doing both atm... Just finishing off the formula, but she has had whole bottles of milk too just to see what happens...... when this formula is gone that's going to be it! Grown up milk all the way LOL, I see your point.

Seona, Hi -
Re: swapping to a sippy for milk, I'm not really in a hurry to get rid of the actual bottles...... Eva takes a sippy for water and will take milk from it during the day, as a snack very occasionally, but I don't know how giving her a sippy of milk would benefit her when it's not something I plan to do all the time IYKWIM? maybe I'm missing something though and need enlightening ;D !

What have others done, what are the benefits?

Paula , how much milk did your lo take in those 2 bottles?

ta  ;)

It is advised to stop bottles for milk around 1 year so that is why I suggested switching a milk feed into a cup as it would help in the transition away from bottles.  Bottles make it easier to take larger amounts of milk and are not so good for their teeth and that is the reasoning behind making the switch.

Interesting....Maybe I'm being dense here but why are they bad for their teeth? Is it to do with the formationof the position of the teeth?  - sorry so many Q's.
We don't get this same advice here, as far as I'm aware.Or atleast I've never heard it .... All the mothers I  know with kids this age, and slightly older are stilll using bottles....

it is to do with the milk pooling around the teeth and causing 'baby bottle mouth'. I googled for a few links and a lot of them say to use a cup for milk from around 1 year e.g. this one:

Spanna, my DD was taking between 7-9 oz per bottle when she was on 2 bottles.

With regards to the bottles, as long as your lo's teeth are brushed before bed, I would think it is fine.  We have just weaned DD onto a sippy cup of milk now.  Took us a while, but she has finally gone from bottle to cup with her milk.  She is nearly 23 months.

Thank you for this thread!

DS is 13 months old.  We're doing breakfast at 0740ish, bottle/cup at 0930 and a bedtime bottle.

If I offer milk in a cup, DS only takes about 50mls (2floz), but if it comes in a bottle....more like 200mls(7floz).

Paula, thank you for adding that last bit.  I was feeling like bad mummy for still using bottles (he likes them and, I know I'm being silly, but its lovely to hold him while he drinks ::)).

Yes, in the UK they usually advise to get rid of bottles at around one year and switch to sippies.  My HV, GP and hospital paed all confirmed that the reason for this is because otherwise many parents tend to give LO a bottle IN their cot and fall asleep with it. Then LO is left with milk residue in their mouth all night.  Babies who drink from bottles after the age of one are no more likely to have teeth problems if proper dental hygiene is practiced - you can give milk in a sippy but if you're not brushing your LO's teeth before bed then it's no different than if it is in a bottle.

Spanna we are doing the same with the formula transition. We've just done a milk challenge and DS has outgrown his milk allergy (hooray!) and I  mm doing a mix of formula and milk at the moment and he's at 4:4 now so cutting it back gradually.  So, when this last tin of formula is done, he's onto full bottles of milk! How much easier does that make life!

I've spent the past few weeks going over the bottle vs sippy cup thing in my head.  We have spent a small fortune on different sippy cups in the past month and haven't found any that are large enough AND have handles AND have a spout that DS can drink from comfortably.  He has some Tommee Tippees that he loves but they are only 5oz cups, and he needs more milk than that.  All the others have SOMETHING wrong with them, quite often it's just that the flow is too fast and it chokes him.  I could start my own sippy cup business from what I've got in my kitchen cupboards!

Basically we decided that there is no rush to get off of the bottles. He's a "sucky" baby and really needs that comfort sucking before bed, it's part of his routine and comfort and what not.  We'll re-evaluate as time goes on if we can/should ditch the bottle. He still does a full bottle in the mornings as well, although I give him cheerios while I am making it and then proper breakfast after he's done.  So 16 ounces a day total most days.

Seona thanks for the link. Get it  now.....
Not sure how I can effectively brush lo's teeth, since she won't let me ! She'll play w the brush and I get a bout 2 secs to brush !! ::) an dthen she goes into clamp down ...

Paula, I agree with you. Surely the  bottles should be as ok as a cup if you are brushing the lo's teeth.
ok so here's the god's honest truth Eva has her last bottle in her room and then goes straight into her cot :o though I do "attempt' to attend to her teeth when she is getting her bath/shower......

Her routine is bath, book, bottle, bed.
I can just imagine her reaction if I start shoving a toothbrush into her mouth ....it would be on for young and old! She bearly tolerates it in the bath. And that would be nice calm baby out the window, (not literally!)....

So now what do I do!? regardless of sippy or bottle!

Does everyone else brush their 1 yo's teeth after their last bottle and before bed? (Honest answers please LOL ;) )Am I the only bad mother here?

Mashi, thanks  for your input re: the formula...I bought 4L today of whole milk for Eva today, still cheaper then formula hahaha ;) and  way easier....

Re: cups I found the Heinz straw cup good and they do a non-straw regular sippy too, holds up to 300mls I think. I got it with intention of Eva transitioning and then thought..why am I doing this ?,which leads me back here LOL

Spanna - we do the same - bath, bottle, bed. There is another thread where someone has asked about this and quite a few of us have said the same thing...that brushing teeth gets a calm LO wound up, and so it's not worth the effort before bed.  I brush his teeth in the morning when he wakes up, after his lunch, and after bath.  Sometimes we do it another couple of times in the day because he bangs on the bathroom door and cries until I take him in to brush  ::)

What I have been trying to encourage DH to do (he does bedtime routine and bottle, bed, etc) is to offer a bit of water in his sippy after he finishes his milk so that at least he is rinsing out his mouth.  But, DH isn't always as co-operative as I would like him to be....now I know where DS gets it from!!!

I keep forgetting to brush teeth at night!  So does DH.  So we brush approx 75% of the time.... :-[

The silly thing is that DS loves toothbrushing - he grabs hold of the toothbrush and -- with a triumph of enthusiasm over accuracy, lol -- manages pretty well really.

Mashi, I was taken aback to read that the reason for the advice to drop bottles by 1 is that lots of people would otherwise be tempted to leave bottles in cots overnight.   Does anyone here do that?
