Can you guys check your yogurt labels for me?
« on: September 16, 2009, 16:51:03 pm »

I'm having a hard time finding yogurt that isn't sugar-laden here, and I'm wondering if the problem isn't the yogurt, but me!

Have done some googling and can't find out what is a reasonable amount of sugar to be in a yogurt - hate giving DS sugar that he doesn't need and I don't want yogurt to have to be a "treat" iykwim.

Also can't find sugar content for various yogurts online - can get fat content, yes but not sugar. I won't be able to get the American/UK brands here, but am just looking for some across-the-board sugar amounts in the yogurts that you feed your LOs.

Most of the yogurts that I have checked hover in somewhere around 18g - 25g of sugar per 100g. Seems really high to me.  The alpro soy is 13g per 100g and although that seems a bit high to me as well, I'm looking for milk-based yogurt that comes in at least as low as that.  But am not sure if I am being unreasonable and yogurts with less sugar exist or not and all of my seraching is in vain?

Hope I am making sense!

I just looked at the cultured coconut milk that I have on hand (same size and style as yogurt) and it has 19g sugar per 170g of yogurt.  That tastes awfully sweet to me, so I can see why you're concerned as your % of sugar is even higher.

Remember that some of what is listed as sugar is naturally occurring sugar in milk, not added sugar.   Perhaps check the nutrition information on a carton of milk to get a sense for how much sugar is naturally occurring in milk?

What about buying Greek yogurt and blending/chopping fruit into it?
DS loves this and it's much healthier ;D

GREAT post, I was just going to ask the same.  I fed my daughter Yo Baby yogurt (in the States here) and when I went to go buy it for my son I was surprised they didn't have a plain flavor then got to thinking about sugar, no clue why I didn't think about this with my daughter.  I am also looking for suggestions.  On another thread someone said they make their own?

Yes, definitely. I've read that lactose makes up 6g of sugar per 100g of a milk product. So that part is accounted for, if my reading is correct. And I know that a certain amount is the fruit if it is fruited yogurt....but even with that added in, I don't know if 22g is unreasonable or if it is a reality of how sweet yogurt really is, you know?

Lissybits, I have hmmmd and haaaahd over Greek yogurt. Partly because I'm not 100% convinced that the stuff I think is Greek yogurt really IS Greek yogurt or not (ugh, the first while in a foreign language is SO frustrating!) and also because I don't like Greek yogurt except for cooking so I think I feel a bit bad about giving it to him!! Then again, I hate peas and don't mind giving him a bucket of them each week, so maybe I just need to get over it!!!!

Jill, my mom used to make her own yogurt. I doubt that here I can manage to find the starter product and read instructions, nor have the time/willpower/energy to follow through with it!  BUT if you can get the starter packet stuff, you just add your milk (and possibly something else?) and let it sit 24 hours. She LOVED it! If you can do it, go for it!

I have not yet been able to find a yogurt that is not high in sugar...and my dd loves it. We keep her sugar as low as we can, so I am able to try and justify the yogurt, knowing that she doesn't get added sugar anyplace else. It makes me crazy, though!

We buy Yo Kids organic, 13 grams of sugar.  There are other brands that are way higher...like 23 or 24 grams, so this is the best I can do.  The label says "25% less sugar" than other brands.

Hats off to those who make their own...I don't think that's something I can get into!   :-[

Actually, you can just use a tablespoon of a commercial yogurt as your starter to make your own as long as it is one that contains "live and active cultures."  A friend of mine makes it and gave me directions.  I've have to ask her for specifics again, but it's something like heat up the milk, let it cool, add a scoop of yogurt to it, let it sit overnight in your oven with the light on and viola, you have yogurt.

I buy Activia and the vanilla flavour has 13g of sugar/100g serving and the fruit flavoured ones all seem to have 14g. It's really tasty stuff, I really am not a yogurt fan at all and I love it.

Yeo Valley organic natural yoghurt (the dairy is local ;)) with 6.6grams of sugar per 100g.

I add chopped fresh fruit, or stewed dried fruit (apricots are great for this), or st dalfour jam (the stuff made with concentrated grape juice instead of sugar).   It works really well.

Making my own yogurt no longer sounds at all appetizing LOL!!  Hahahahaha!  BUT, thank you for the idea  ;)

I'll have to check labels when I go looking for yogurt again.  DS was just on antibiotics and although I was going to wait until he was 8 months old I may try it just to help his insides reset with the good bacteria.

Making your own yogurt is super-easy, actually; I've started making it again because it's much MUCH less expensive than buying even in 32-ounce tubs. And yes, I do use a spoonful or two of the last batch as a starter culture. Easy peasy! I think I'll post recipe links wherever all the recipes go here.

Just looked at a tub of plain yogurt, 32 ounces (907g) and there are 13g of sugars, presumably all naturally-occurring since it's plain yogurt. The way I usually give it to the girls is to add some Nordic Naturals flavored fish oil - it comes (seriously!) in lemon, orange, peach, and strawberry, and our current bottle is strawberry - some vanilla, and some liquid stevia extract. NO added sugar from that, and tasty! If you use the orange flavor with vanilla, it tastes like orange creamsicle! :-) We haven't bought yogurt with any other flavors for a long time.

not sure what the exact sugar content was, but in uk i was getting 'plum baby' or 'rachael's organic' baby and toddler yoghurts. both of which had no added sugar and were sweetened with pure fruit puree.

having the same prob as you now i'm back in australia, cant for the life of me find a yoghurt (other than natural and greek) that has no added sugar.

In Aus I used to get Jalna yogurt, it's also just sweetened with fruit.

So it does seem that it's possible at least, to get lower sugar yogurt. Hmmmm.  Back to the supermarket to trudge through the yogurt aisle again.  Which is not as easy as you might think; picture your supermarket at home, and take the entire dairy section: all of the milk, butter, cheese, yogurt, cream, spreads, the whole whack of it.  Now double that.  THAT is the yogurt section alone in our local grocery store.   :o

And that's a LOT of labels to read!!!
