Trialling soy at the moment
« on: September 19, 2009, 21:21:57 pm »
Hi,
My dd is nearly 18 months old.at 12 weeks old we discovered she was dairy intolerant. Her symptoms were screaming while breast feeding and only drinking as much as would stop her from starving. Sometimes she would go 8 days with basically not drinking at all. She was 50% at birth but has been very low weight since then but is definitely not failing to thrive.

So I stopped eating dairy and she also had one supplementary bottle of neocate a day. She went totally onto neocate at 7.5 months.

She has never had dairy herself, only ever had it through my milk. When she was about 10 months old we gave her a puffed rice cake that had soy in it. She stopped eating again properly for a few days. We didn't give her any soy after that till recently.

She had skin prick tests at 4 months old and they were all negative.

We didn't give her gluten until recently. That trial went fantastically.

A week ago, she got hold of a gingernut that has soy in it and took a couple of bites. Nothing appeared to have happened. Since we were seeing the dietician 5 days later to start a soy trial we thought we may as well start and gave her 1/3 gingernut every day for 5 days. On the day of the appointment dd had a miserable nap and was quite tired. When we saw the dietician she mentioned dd's swollen eyes. To be honest, we hadn't really noticed before. We said we thought it was just because she hadn't slept well that day. It's now Sunday and her eyes are still swollen though (she's had greater amounts of soy since Thursday). We are suspicious that it's the soy (she has had allergic shiners before but we weren't really able to put it down to anything specific and she hasn't had them for maybe 4-6 months).

Anyway she doesn't seem to have any other symptoms (perhaps more grumpy than usual but not sure). I don't know whether she's just getting used to having soy and they'll go away. Don't know if allergiv shiners are the only symptom whether we should stop.... basically not sure what to do! The plan was to trial soy for a month and then we were going to try dairy again.

Any advice?

Edited to say: Just had a thought that it's possibly just hay fever and a coincidence. She has been outside a bit this week. It was possibly last summer and spring that she had the allergic shiners. It's so hard to isolate these things!

Hmm, that is a hard one, as you said she had the shiners last summer and spring, so it's very likely that is what it's resulting from.  Did the doctor say anything about it when she mentioned it?  Can you keep her inside, away from the outdoors, for a week just to see if it makes a difference?

I was thinking along the opposite line of Melanie. Can you stop the ginger biscuits for 7-10 days and see if the swollen eyes go away?  If they do, then instead of re-introducing soy through a ginger biscuit, which may have other things in it that she's not had before and is reacting to (ginger? cinammon? possibly made or baked with butter?) re-introduce soy through something that you can easily be sure that it is the soy. Like.....say, tofu? Or edamame? Soy yogurt, soy margarine, even bread made with soy flour?

If the eyes don't go away after 7-10 days off of the soy then I would be more inclined to think that it is a hayfever allergy, but at the same time, swollen eyes from hayfever tend to get better and worse over the course of a day/week, not stay constant.

The problem with this is that if she IS having an allergic reaction to the soy, being that it is such a highly allergenic food, I don't think it is a good idea to risk continual exposure to it. The immune system reaction can get stronger and stronger when exposed to the allergen, and it's not wise to continue giving a food that she is showing allergic reaction to.  If it's suspected that the swelling is from the soy, I think you are best leaving the soy out for a while and re-trying again in a bit.

Haha!  That WOULD be easier eh?  Definitely makes the most sense...
I meant to mention that as the other option, but that thought failed to make it to my post! :/
