question for baby with cold
« on: September 21, 2009, 08:08:02 am »
Hi,
DS is 10.5 months and after lots of 'nap' issues he was doing about a 4 hour A time. He now has a cold and today was rubbing his eyes after about 2.45 A time. I chanced it and put him to bed and he fell straight to sleep. Is this normal when they are ill? The main reason I put him down is he has been napping so badly the last few days so I needed to try something different to help him rest.

thanks
becky x

Yep - totally normal. They can drop their A time by up to an hour or so - expecially if they were a bit OT anyway.

Just do as you did and follow cues until your lo is well again.

((hugs))

Yeh, just like grown ups, when they're sick they tend to need more sleep.

well he is not taking more sleep, in fact he is only sleeping around 40 mins each nap. He was on about 4 hours A time and so I thought that maybe he was getting OT due to being ill etc. Today cut right back on A time and still 40 min naps. Seems he cannot nap for longer than one sleep cycle while this is going on. Had to do 3 naps today as a result which just felt weird. Think it might be better to go back to original A times tomorrow. He is not that sick, he has a cold but in himself he is fine. What do you think?

I think you have to play it by ear when they're sick. It might be that his snuffly nose is waking him at that sleep cycle transition time. I'd pull out all the medical tricks (vicks, calpol), and trust that things will get back on track once he's well again.
