Problems drinking water
« on: October 05, 2009, 02:07:31 am »
I have been offering DS water in a doidy cup and a sippy cup for about 3 months. Sometimes he will take a sip, but often he just pushes it away, or dips his hands in the doidy cup.  ::) When he does take some, he likes to let the water dribble back out into his bib. Or he will hold the cup with his teeth, take too much, and start to choke and gag. I don't know if I should keep offering, or give it a rest for a few days? Any advice?

I would just keep offering.  You could also try offering him a straw cup so there will be less spillage and playing with the water with his hands.  Or you could offer him the cup in the bath tub.

Thanks.  :) I've been giving him a cup in the water, but I never thought of a straw cup. I'll have to see if I can find one.

Hey sweetie, I agree just keep trying.  They all choke and gag at the beginning and even when my LO was really good with his cup he still loved to spit it all down his front when he had drunk enough :)

I had to try a different one in the beginning which had a really soft teat so that when he chomped on it it squirted water into his mouth....once he got that he went onto a hard spout and then I introduced a straw cup (which took a few days for him to work out).

Good luck

Oh my LO LOVES an open cup too, preferably one of our (plastic) glasses when it just has a dribble in the bottom....he thinks he is soooo clever drinking out of them and if there is only a little bit in the bottom he doesn't make too much mess (he is older though) :)
