Early Wake up for 21 month old
« on: October 08, 2009, 05:26:41 am »
My 21 month DS wakes up at 5am every morning.  I am wondering if this is a problem or if I can stretch him to at least 6am - or if I should just live with it for now!

His daily routine looks like this:-

5am Wake - we try to settle but usually get him up for his first bottle
8am Breakfast (he goes to a childminder because I work)
10.30 Snack
12.00 Lunch
12.30 Sleep
14.15 Wake up (in time for mommy to collect at 2.30)
15.00 Snack
17.30 Dinner
18.00 Bath etc
18.30 Bottle
19.00/19.30 Bedtime (sometimes he plays around in his cot and only goes to sleep an hour later)

He will usually wake up once through the night too but that is a historic habit that we are now trying to fix using wi/wo (it's a long story which includes a bout of chicken pox as well as my in-laws being here for 6 weeks in the summer and us falling into some bad habits!)

Should I just be satisfied with the 5am wake up or does anyone think I can stretch him that little bit later?  Any thoughts welcomed!  At least then if I know that I must just live with it I can stop fretting and trying to figure it out!

Thanks for your help (in advance)!

Does childminder have to wake him up from nap for him to be ready for you?

He's only having about a 10 hour night, sometimes less when he falls asleep later.  That's a classically OT child at bedtime.  I'd bring bedtime forward to 6 or 6:30 and see if that solves your EW.

I think I'd also cut that bottle out upon waking.  At 21 months he doesn't need it, and I have to wonder if he's anxious to wake to have the comforting bottle with mama before she leaves for work.

I might try changing bedtime for 3 days first and then eliminate bottle over the weekend and see what happens!  And I'm not anti-bottle -- my son kept his bedtime bottle until age 3, so I'm a late-bottle user too.  ;D  If you like the bottle in your lives, I'd just change the time so that it's not associated with waking.  I know with BF we often see children waking early for that privilege.  I suspect the bottle can be just as enticing, especially if mommy needs to leave for work not too long after.

Thanks Becky1969

Yes, my childminder often has to wake him up to be ready for me to collect him and I think he might sleep longer if left.

I'm concious of the 10 hour (or less) night and that's why I've been mulling it over.  I've also been thinking about the bottle when he wakes up and I know he doesn't need it - definitely a comfort for him and I agree maybe that's also a problem - however it scares me a bit to take it away (what do I give him instead?).

I'll take your advice and firstly put him to bed earlier - he used to go to bed earlier but he's always still woken at 5am - maybe that's just the way it's going to be for now!  At least though if I put him to bed earlier he's getting more sleep at night ... And this suits me fine as it means I have more time to spend with my older son in the evenings (he'll be delighted for more 1:1 mama time!).

Will keep you posted and no doubt be back for more advice when I decide to take the morning bottle away!

Thanks again

I've got a 20 month old who's been waking 5.30 - 6 for a year now! So what do I know?! But can I also suggest an earlier nap? 5am to 12.30 is a long old stretch - and if he went to bed say 11 or 11.30 the cm wouldn't have to wake him - he could sleep as long as he wants.

Is that do-able?

I agree with PP.  I'd give an earlier nap and let him sleep as long as he wants.  If he gets a 2.5-3 hour nap in him it might help the EW problem.

I agree however childminder can't do earlier as she's out with the kids in the morning at playgroup or other activities ... can't really ask her to change her day just for him??  Also, sometimes (like today) he's been up since 05.45 but wouldn't go down for nap with her until 13.15 - little monkey!  Which means only 1 hour nap before mommy came to fetch him ...  Early to bed tonight!!

He was probably really really OT which was why he had trouble sleeping.

guess you're stuck, tho, with nap time!
