Open cup drinking
« on: October 16, 2009, 13:46:39 pm »
Hi all, just wondering when people made the switch to drinking from an open cup? DD is 19mo but very interested in drinking like mummy and daddy and I want to foster that enthusiasm before she gets too attached to sippy cup/straws. Yesterday I decided to just go for it, so we used a doidy cup at mealtimes. Just water, and not too much in. She did well at first with me watching carefully, but then, when I'd taken my eye off the ball for a second, she tipped it all down her front. I'm talking on purpose here - not just an accidental spill. She had that glint in her eye! This happened 3 times yesterday (3 changes of clothes)! Each time I took it away and gave her the straw cup instead. Is she too young, or shall I persevere?

We actually started with an open cup when DS was maybe 8 months old.  Of course we had to hold it for him, and for the most part we still have to help him even now or else he'll tip it too far and spill it everywhere.   ::)  But he's always preferred drinking that way and still does.  We use a doidy but he will drink out of a regular cup too although it's harder because he has to tip it further.  He can hold it on his own but I don't let him unless there's only a little bit of liquid in it, he doesn't have much control.

What we do is use the open cup at mealtimes when we are there to help, and a sippy when he is on the go.  I don't see any reason why you can't keep trying with your DD.  Maybe just have some patience and perservere, but I think she'll catch on really fast.  Oh, I'm sure the spilling on purpose is part of the fun for them, maybe just keep reminding her that is not the way to drink.  But if she doesn't try she'll never learn!  I haven't quite go to that part yet so not much help there.  :)

we started hunter out with an open cup at a similar age. (he'd drank from an open cup loads of times before this but that was with us helping to hold it). started with just an oz. once he got the hang of that did 2 ozs, etc. for about a month now he is fine with half to 2/3 or a cup. we did it a snacks rather than meals as he always has a huge drink with meals, but snacks is only a smaller amount of water (plus water was easier to clean up than juice/milk!). now he has a cup at most meal times too and like pp we still use a non spill sippy when out and about. just keep letting her practice and she'll soon get the hang of it :-*

My daughter is 18 months old. Drinks water and juice from an open cup but not milk. I tried to feed her milk in an open cup but she refused to drink from. By the way she drinks milk from a straw cup.
Please advice how can I transition her to an open cup to drink milk.

Thanks in advance.

Our daughter has always preferred an open cup to a sippy--and my rule is that she can have the open cup at the table only, and if she purposely dumps it then it goes away :). 19 mos old is probably old enough to make that connection. If our dd wants to drink elsewhere in the house, it's sippy only.
