Difference between NW and EW?

Hi BWers,

What time constitutes an EW as opposed to a NW?
My LO usually wakes between 4:45 and 5:30 for his second feed of the "night" but I have been advised by my doc that this should be an EW, not a NW, and that I should get him up.

Opinions? Ideas? Advice?!

Unless your Dr is going to be up with you from 4:45 then I would do everything in my power to make sure he goes back down to sleep.  Personally I refuse to start the day until 6am - even if that means spending an hour trying to get him back to sleep again (sometimes works/sometimes doesn't). 

My LO usually tries to start the day at 5:30am.  This morning I woke at 5:20 and spend 30 mins shh/patting him (on and off).  Eventually left the room at 5:50 and then he woke again at 6:10.  I am hoping that if I do this for a few days I might be able to get him waking after 6am without my help.

Hi there, could you post your routine EAS.  What time is bedtime and what does your LO normally sleep at night i.e. 10, 11, or 12 hours?  How old is your LO?

In any case, agree with pp, you ideally want to pick a start and end time to their day and stick to that as much as possible.  I also refuse to get LO out of crib until after 6 a.m. even though every day he is up between 5 - 6.  This morning was 5:30 and let him babble and stuff until about 6:30 before we started our day.  For us shush/pat etc. doesn't help extend EW because he seems to only do about 10 or 11 hours at night no matter what.  12 hours for us is a pipe dream.

here is a typical day for us (times change but the root problems remain!)
LO sleeps beautifully during the night (most of the time!!) - usually about 4 hours between bed and the DF, then another 4 between DF and first NW, about 2-3 hours between 1st NW and get up time.

(LO usually wakes around 5:30 but can sometimes get him back down for another hour)

E:6.50 - 7:15
A: 7:15 -8:10 (p/s, pu/pd 7:35 - 8:10)
S: 8:10 - 8:40
A: (p/s, pu/pd 8:40 - 9:20)
A: 9:20 - 9:45

E: 9.45 - 10:20
A: 10:20 - 11.10 (p/s, pu/pd 10.45 - 11:10)
S: 11:10 - 11:35
A: (p/s, pu/pd 11:35 - 11:50)
A: 11:50 - 12:50

E: 12:50 - 1:30
A/S: 1:30 - 3:20 (in a sling, catnapped for 10m bursts throughout)

E: 3:20 - 3:40
A: 3:40 - 5:30 (in a sling, catnapped for 10m bursts throughout)

E: 5:30 - 6:10pm
A: 6:10 - 6:50 (includes bath, massage, cuddles)
S: (p/s, pu/pd for about 30m)

E (DF): 10.30 - 10:45

Hi,

How old is your LO?  Looks like your LO is in a major OT cycle - short naps, long A times, etc.  Check out the following link for suggested A times.

Also if the naps are short then you should look to reduce the next A time by 20-30mins to try and get back on track.
