Does this look ok for 13 month old?
« on: October 21, 2009, 00:58:56 am »
Hi ladies!

DD is still taking 3 bottles a day.  She takes anywhere from 4 to 6oz per bottle - she always has. She's never been one to take a huge 8oz bottle.  She is an excellent solids eater, very adventurous, huge appetite.  She does take a straw sippy - water, milk, or sometimes juice. But she will only take a couple ozs at a time.

I keep feeling like I *should* be dropping a bottle, or moving fully to sippys.  I have tried a few times to transition her afternoon bottle to a sippy, and she either refuses it completely, or takes a bit, then cries for her bottle.  I've realized her bottle is a huge comfort for her.

Should I just leave things the way they are for now? Or am I going to run into issues later?

TIA
Caitlin

IMO it really depends on what YOU are comfortable with. I believed that the longer I let DD have bottles the harder it would be to switch and I have never liked older toddlers (2 +) walking around with bottles....but that is just me. So I started switching young. If you don't mind the bottles and feel like you can work at switching later, then by all means. I have heard that consistent bottle use can lead to issues with teeth being out of alignment, but am not sure how accurate/true that is.

I think the amount she is drinking is fine. Since she never took a large amount, the 3 a day seems normal to me. DD takes 3 sippy cups of milk a day (14 months on the 25th) --usually the most in the morning--but I just offer them b/c she enjoys them but still eats well and is active so I figure she is well balanced.

HTH. :)

Hi,
My lo is 13 months today and he's just dropped the 2pm bottle himself.  I started offering it him in a sippy cup and he may drink 2 oz at most but he wasn't really interested.  He has 1 bottle now in morning and 1 for bed and for now I'm happy with that.  When he hit 1 years, I beat myself up that he shouldn't have botle for bed but I've resigned myself to the fact he enjoys it.  If he was 5 years and still having a bottle then I think I'd panic but he's just 1 so I've stopped beating myself up about it.  I've had frinds who transferred from bottle later on and didn't seem to have too many problems but like it's been said-it's your choice, you're Mum! My lo loves his bedtime bottle so for now as he's still young, I'm not worries.
HTH
Sarah

Also, at the minute, he won't take more than a few of oz from his cup.

Thanks Sarah and Nicole.  :)
I reallly don't mind she still takes bottles. Some of our friends have made a super smooth transition to the sippy, but I've realized DD is just going to take more time. I know we'll get there eventually, and I'm sure sooner than later.
The only bottle that bugs me is that afternoon one - it's not a big deal or anything, I'd just prefer it to be in a sippy w/ a snack. So, I may give it another go trying to transition that one.  I just know it's going to be a slow road  :P

Don't worry.......it'll happen at some point and as long as she is happy, learning, and growing, then she's doing great!

I thought this transition would be difficult for us, because my LO is not good with change.  I just kept giving him milk in a sippy with all of his meals, without any pressure to drink it.  One day i noticed that he chugged it and I switched his afternoon bottle to a sippy and he took it.  He actually transitioned himself totally on to sippy cups, which was a huge shock to me.  I think that if you keep offering it, one day your LO will take more and then you can try and make the transition.

Hey Caitlin! ;D

What i am in the process of doing with D is putting a teat from her bottle onto her sippy cup(obviously they are the same make so the teat fits the cup,not sure how it would work with different makes :-\) She has now got used to drinking milk from her 'cup' so i have swapped the teat for the cup spout and she is taking it fine.i dont think she has noticed the difference! i have done that for the pm milk but am yet to do it for the others.

BTW D has acup of milk morning and pm and a BF last thing at night. She just loves her milk and doesnt drink much else.i offer water/juice with meals but she really doesnt drink much of this.so for me it helps to know she is getting plenty of fluid.

hth..Lucy xxx

Is the afternoon bottle one before a nap? if so, perhaps you could concentrate on getting rid of the morning one instead. You could give her a sippy with breakfast instead.

Speaking of taking their time with change, my DS still won't even drink milk in a sippy or bottle!  I still offer a small amount of milk in a sippy, but last time he just shook his head and shoved it off the high chair  ::)

Thanks for the replies everyone! I guess at this age they're all just totally different - which is good to hear! I actually wrote this post after an aquintance w/ a LO DD's age was bragging about how easily he transitioned to sippys, blah blah blah  ::)

Lucy - hi! didn't know there were cups that could be used w/ bottle teats. May go looking around at different cups a bit more, see if i can find something else that'll work.

Her afternoon bottle is after nap, and I'm realizing that this is a major comfort one for her. She's all groggy and sleepy still, and very snuggly.  So maybe I will try to transition the a.m. one.
I don't know - we'll get there one day.  I'm sure it'll be nothing I do! GA will just decide out of the blue she's had it with bottles!!!  :P
