help with short naps please
« on: November 09, 2009, 21:29:43 pm »
My ds is 17 weeks old.

He sleeps well overnight and always has done. Unfortunately he has always been a short napper. When he was a few weeks old he would sleep for 1-2 hrs but since then it is 45 mins to the dot!!!

I have been trying out the EASY routine for the past week and have been fiddling A times but it is having no impact on his naps. I have tried shh/pat once but he is more stimulated by me being in the room. At night time he goes down without any crying but during the day he will fall asleep after crying/shouting for usually less than 5 mins.

When we were on a 3 hrly routine the 45 min nap was not too bad a problem and i could cope with adding in a few more short naps. Now we are on the 3.5 EASY he is having to stay awake a long time for his next feed and A time but i'm unsure how to 'tweek' things. His A time is usually 1.5 hrs then he starts to get cranky (dont get any yawning til much later) Today i tried extending his A time to 1.45 but by the time he went to sleep it was 2hrs and he then only slept for 30 mins. He can cope with 4hrly feeding (BF) but not with the lack of sleep between feeds so i always end up feeding him earlier. My typical day looks like this...

E: 7.30
A: 8am usually kicking on playmat or in Jumperoo
S: 9am for 45 mins
A: until next feed

E: 11am
A:
S:12.30pm for 45 mins
A: until next feed

This is where is goes a bit wrong as he is so tired :(

E/S: 2.30/2.45 (usually falls asleep during/after this feed for 45 mins)
A: 3.15/3.30
E/S: 4.30 top up if needed then S for 45 mins
A 5.15 (kicking then bath at 6pm)
E: 6.15pm
S: 7pm (self settles no crying)

DF: 10.30 Formula bottle 6oz

Usually will sleep well overnight. May wake but self settles (so i know he can do it!!!)

Any ideas how i can improve the situation? Thanks in advance x

Hi there, perhaps try only increasing his A time by 10mins instead of 15mins, it may just be a bit too much for him to handle all at once. 45min naps usually do mean UT so i think you are doing the right thing by increasing his A time. Its a hard time transitioning from the 3 hour EASY to the 4 Hour EASY!

Thank you for your reply.

I've just put him down now so A time of 1hr40 min. He went down well. I am going to watch his nap and see what happens. Then i may try W2S. Will this work if he is UT? Last night was really bad (up at least twice) because he is so OT by the end of the day. Really feel that sorting the naps will help get the nights back on track.

Thank you again
