dehydration from vomitting and stalled milk production HELP!
« on: November 10, 2009, 03:46:30 am »
The dr. thinks I have a type a virus - such as H1N1. They put me on tamiflu, which I know hasn't been approved for breastfeeding, so I am giving her frozen breastmilk as of this evening. However, since I am so dehydrated, I think my milk production has officially stalled. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY RECOMMENDATIONS? I wonder if I can get a clinic to give me an iv with fluids???
Help, I don't want this to be the end of breastfeeding...

Oh no, how terrible for you, I hope you get better fast, I'm sending you get well vibes :-*!

A few years ago I got really sick with a flu and was totally dehydrated as I couldn't keep anything down for 3 days (I would literally take a sip of water and it would come right back up). My entire body hurt and I was in really bad shape so my dh actually took me to the hospital and they instantly gave me an iv, they kept me from around midnight until 4 in the morning- can't remember how many bags of fluid they gave me in the iv but when they were done and I got to leave I felt like a different person- instantly better. So, maybe try the hospital? I can't picture walk in clinics doing iv (?). I would say to pump like crazy but if you're really sick you probably don't have the energy to not to mention if you are dehydrated you won't get anything out anyways.

Big big (((hugs))), that's awful!!

I agree with Marian, I would pump like crazy whenever you feel up to it.  Even if you don't get anything out, the stimulation will hopefully help your production.  I would also call your doctor/lactation consultant/clinic/hospital and explain the situation to see if you can get iv fluids.

Let us know how things are going!  More get well vibes are being sent your way :-*

thanks... I also found out on the Kellymom site that nursing while taking tamiflu is okay, so I am keeping expressed milk now.  No puking today, but milk production is still low, so I am pumping as much as I can and nursing too, although I took the baby to daycare mid-morning to lessen her exposure and give me some much needed rest.
