5 week baby, Daytime naps / sleeping
« on: November 16, 2009, 19:31:50 pm »
My baby is 5 weeks old and she naps well during the day/evening, and generally sleeps well at night.

When she naps during the day she's in her moses basket with us in the lounge, at bed time we take her up with us when we are ready to go to bed (she's obviously in our room).

When she's napping obviously my husband and i chat, watch tv... i know in the BW book Tracy says out of respect baby should have quiet when she's sleeping.  I'm a tad confused.  I don't want to put her in a dark room as i only want the dark to represent night time.  When she naps should i put her upstairs in our room with a monitor or is it ok to keep her in the lounge at this stage?  If she's ok in the lounge at what age should she go into the bedroom for a nap.

Also, what age should she go into her big cot in her own room?  She's nearly 11lb and it won't be long before she's too big for her moses basket. Her bedroom is next door to ours.

Thanks.

Hi there, well for us we always put Caleb in our room in his bassinet for naps, we shut the curtains and kept the monitor on. this also allowed us to have our own quiet time together, able to do things we couldnt do when he was awake etc, when he was awake we made sure he saw lots of daylight so he knew it was daytime, also keeping their naps to only 2 hours teaches them the difference between day and night sleep.

as for moving to a cot, we moved Caleb when he was bout 5-6 weeks old, this was due to the fact that he grunted in his sleep and it was driving me crazy!!! i couldnt sleep with him making that noise, i remember the first night i put him in his own room i felt so awful having him so far away from me, but it didnt bother him at all, he has always slept in his cot now :)

Well, Georgia is a noisy sleeper, she's a great lil sleeper, goes down at 12.30am until 5am.  She's around the 11lb mark now so is getting a bit big for her moses basket. The mattress is very dented!!  She's only 5 weeks so i'll keep her with me for a couple more weeks then think about putting her in her own room.  Her room has blackout blinds so maybe i'll start putting her in there for her naps.  I think i'll put her moses basket into the cot so she gets used to the view and the smells, this way she'll get her used to her own room beforfe the big transition!

Thanks for your help.

That's a good idea with the basket in her cot. When you say she goes down at 12.30 am are you saying that's her bedtime or do you mean just a night feed? Because if she's only sleeping 5 hours a night that's not enough, she needs to be sleeping 12 hours at night starting around 7pmish

Oh, well i feed her at 6pm, 9pm, then 12am - she naps on/off inbetween, more on than off now her colic has settled. I usually bath her after her 6pm feed - around the 7pm mark, then lay her for a rest until her next feed.  I am going to start keeping her upstairs in the evenings for sleeping so she is undisturbed. Her 9pm and 12am feeds are done with a lamp on in quiet conditions.

I haven't been too strict as she has is brand new and sleeping a lot in the day.  I have been gently easing her into a routine. The 5 hours through the night is a good sign though, it shows that she is getting used to night time, don't you think?  She wakes at 5am for a feed but does go back to sleep from 5.30am - 9am.  Therefore between 9pm - 9am she is getting approx.  10 hours sleep, plus she sleeps after her bath for approx. 2 hours.

As she's still a newborn her tummy won't allow her to go more than 5 hours at the moment but my health visitor said she's ready for 5oz so that may make her go longer?!

we started Caleb on BW at 3 weeks old and he was sleeping 12 hours at night (with feeds) Ideally you dont want to be putting her to bed any later than 8pm, her days need to be 12 hours long and the same with her nights, so all naps are within the 12 hour daytime period and all longterm sleeping (wiht no wakings by us, only if she wakes for a feed and then straight back to sleep) is done in the 12 hour night period.

take a look at these routines for examples of what you should be looking at doing: http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=10384.0
