Is it OK to use fast flow nipple while BF'ing??
« on: November 17, 2009, 03:20:59 am »
My DS is 8 1/2 mo and recently started day care.  He's still BF'ing so I give them bottles of EBM.  But they said it's taking him about 30 minutes to finish a 6 oz bottle, which seems very long to me.  He's still using the slow flow newborn nipple on the Playtex drop-in bottle because I've always been afraid that BF'ing would be frustrating for him if he got used to a fast flow nipple.  But at 8 mo, he can start using a faster flow nipple and still be OK with BF'ing, right?

Hi :)

Not sure about the fast flow - we tried it, and not only did it make a mess but ds starting choking on the milk as it came out so quickly!  We use the playtex drop-ins as well, and I got the variable flow nipple.  It's Y-cut, and says that it's designed for thicker liquids, but ds LOVES it.  It kind of mimics bfing in the sense that the harder he sucks, the faster the liquid comes out, but if he doesn't suck it doesn't just drip into his mouth.  Plus he can finish a 5-6oz bottle in less than 10 minutes!  (if he's so inclined ;))

HTH :)
