Surgery and breast feeding - should I stop?
« on: November 24, 2009, 10:19:18 am »
???  I am having surgery on 21 Dec and I am currently bf my lo who has just turned 7 mths.  In hospital I have to stay over for 2 nights post surgery and it states visiting hours only 6 - 9pm and no kids.  I have waited 6 years for this so I don't want to miss out, but if at all possible I would prefer to carrying on bf.  I don't know as yet whether they would let me bf morning and night at least, I will ask when I have my initial consultation.

Any ideas or suggestions on how to accomplish this?  If I have to, I don't mind giving up bf but with this being my last....

many thanks

Hi there! :)

I would first look into the medications that are being used for your surgery.  Are any of them contraindicated while breastfeeding?  You may not have a choice but to feed in another way during your stay for that reason alone.  However, you don't necessarily have to give up bfing.  You could pump during your stay and discard the milk (if needed) to maintain your supply, then return to bfing when you go home.

If you are able to breastfeed, I would hope that the hospital would make an exception in the visiting hours for a breastfeeding mother!  I'm not sure what the laws are in the UK (perhaps someone else can jump in!) but in Canada there are laws protecting the rights of breastfeeding mothers to nurse as necessary.  You may want to look into it as accommodations could easily be made.  Again though, if it truly isn't possible or you're not comfortable with that, you could pump to maintain supply and your dh could offer the ebm to your lo until you are home.

HTH, and good luck with the surgery!  I hope all goes well :)

Vikki had great advice, so I'll just send {{hugs}} for you.  And this is often cited as THE resource regarding meds & breastfeeding:  http://www.ibreastfeeding.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=1&products_id=144  Your doc should have access to this or something similar.  :-*

Agree with all advice given so far.  I would ask about your LO rooming in also if you feel up to that.
Good luck with the surgery
