sleeping issues
« on: November 28, 2009, 11:07:48 am »
Hi there

have a 1 year old wee girl, and trying to get her to sleep is getting hard now, she has always relied on a bottle to get her to sleep at anytime,  (before the bottle my fincee always needed to have her breast feed first to go to sleep when she was younger) and we cannot seem to get her of this habit without her throwing tantrums and such. she does have a bed time which is stuck to and does sleep through the night most times, but was wondering if someone knows how to get her of the bottle feeds to sleep as she wont sleep any other way.

thanks.

Hi there  :)

It sounds like feeding to sleep is your babe's prop.  As your LO is 1, I'm going to move this over to sleeping for toddlers where you will get more experienced eyes.

Try not to worry. It's a really really common prop and lots of parents wean this successfully. I worked hard at making sure feeding to sleep wasn't a prop for us, but instead I made myself the prop!! So no feeding to sleep, but I had to be there while he went to sleep - my hand on his cheek or in his hand, or sitting next to him etc. Even at 2am, 4am etc urgh. So I was the prop for 10 months. I gradually weaned that prop and from 10months on he has been an independent sleeper who gets fussy if I stay in the room when he's trying to sleep!

What I'm trying to say is, don't worry. Lots of us are sleep props in one way or another. Changing that is totally doable.
