hey everyone,
Trying to "thicken" her feeds...put 1 tsp of rice cereal with 1 tbsp of bm. She tried it and ate almost all of it and then stuck her fingers in her mouth and cried. She then had breastmilk. Since then her bib and shirt are drenched in the biggest spit up we've ever had...is it correlated? Normal? Maybe she's not really "ready" after all? she watches us eat with interest and salivates when she sees what I'm cooking.

tia!

Was she sitting upright for a while?  How soon did the spit up occur?  Here are some of the signs to look for when thinking of starting solids.  All los are different and even if they do show some or all of the signs, waiting at least 6 mos will not negatively affect the learning curve.

My daughter showed the classic signs of being interested in solids at 5 months but was definitely not ready to start until 6 months. We would try infant cereal once a week; she hated it until one day after she turned 6 months and then she was happy to eat the cereal!

We had bad luck with rice cereal. We started with infant oatmeal instead. The rice cereal gave her digestive problems. We let it go, and now that she is more mature at 9 months she can eat rice cereal just fine (I mix brown rice with pureed meats and veggies sometimes).

hey sorry crazy insane reflux day and didn't get a chance to respond :)

thanks guys for the responses. I've stopped with the rice cereal. It was just that one day to see if it would help her. She wasn't sitting for long, no. the spit up occurred soon after she fed.

thanks ladies. xx

Wait a few more weeks and then try the solids again.  Maybe try pear purees instead as this is gentle on system.  Rice cereal can cause some tummy trouble for los so don't feel pressured to start with rice cereal first.  Despite what some may think, bm babies do not need the extra iron in the rice cereal which in turn can be constipating as their system cannot fully digest the excess iron.
