OK i need some serious help!
« on: December 13, 2009, 00:53:05 am »
i have a number of issues right now but im posting in naps because thats my biggest issue. my LO is 11weeks old and we have been doing easy since 6 weeks. she has always screamed her head off before naps. i know you would think that means shes OT or UT but trust me i have tried adjusting both ways and either way she still screams although when i increased her A time she only screamed for about 5 min instead of her usual 30. so now she is screaming "in her sleep" at the 30min -1hr mark. she screams hysterically for up to 30mins and no matter what i do she will not calm down unless i nurse her. i know its bad i literally just started doing this 3 days ago b/c she has a cold and idk if she is dehydrated or something so ive just been feeding her when she does this.i have also noticed that when she nurses on my left side she continuously pulls her self off then latches right back on for the whole 15mins or so. shes doesnt do it on the right side though, even if i start the feed on the left. so idk whats up with that. anyways i brought her to the doctors and asked about this whole screaming in her sleep at naptime this and she said its just a behavioral thing. im thinking shes so little how does she have a behavioral issue...but idk it started after she got her 2month vaccines...so idk what to do anymore everything is all screwed up and shes not getting enough naptime so shes OT all day after the first nap goes haywire. today i did EAEAS in the morning and she took a 2hour nap she woke up at 12:30 and i fed her then at 1:30 she was tired again and i put her for a nap and she did the whole screaming thing after an hour.
so i have tried wake to sleep and httj and none of that has helped at all...
i know shes young but do you think i should put her on the two nap plan? what am suppose to do when shes screaming, when i pick her up she still screams but should i pick her up? i try shh/pat and it does not affect her when shes in this state. also i know shes too young for pu/pd but when i have her in the crib and she starts screaming do i just keep shh patting her until she stops and goes to sleep? or do i pick her up and calm her down? ive been picking her up and its not going too well but i also dont want to screw her up emotionally and what not. im so confused i need help! at night now too when i nurse her i do it in my bed and now if i put her in the crib after she wakes to eaat (lately at 1am) she wont go back in her crib she will wake right up and start crying. she sleeps great at night usually.

so our ideal day would go like this:                             but its going more like this:
7am wake up                                                                     E
7:30A                                                                               A
8:15S                                                                              S 1hr
10 E                                                                                9:15   E
10:30A                                                                                9:30/45A
11:15S                                                                               10:30S
1E                                                                                11:30E
1:30A                                                                            12 A
2:15S                                                                              12:45 S
4E                                                                                   1:45 E
4:30A                                                                               2:15 A
5pm catnap                                                                           3S
4 E

when the catnap rolls around its more like bedtime. i let her sleep in my wrap and she will sleep until her 7pm feed then i put her i n bed if i try to wake her up shes hysterical and wont go to bed until about 9pm so idk what to do..

ok, i cant make sense of the above routine, are you able to post it again?

what i am concerned about is reflux, the screaming indicates pain, especially for that long and also the bobbing off and on the breast (even if it is only one breast she does it on) take a look here: http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=654.0

also i would definatley not put her on a two nap a day routine, theres no way shes ready for it, that only happens at around 7 months old. If she does have reflux then the picking up and putting down wouldnt help nor will patting so much. what we did was pat the mattress next to his head instead. when you do pat her how long do you do it for? do you think your little one could be suffering from reflux?

yes she has reflux i forgot to mention that. shes on medicine for it though. the thing is even if i put her in the wrap to nap she still screams at the hour mark even though shes straight up. im trying to get back on track today since we have been all screwed up with her cold. i will post what happens today. our major issue is the screaming though...im assuming shes doing it when the sleep cycle starts over. ive watched her and she does it right before the jolting starts...
do you think she may need a medicine dose increase? shes on .8ml twice a day

I think that's 2 x long naps PLUS a catnap at this age. To cope with 2 naps per day they really need to handle at least 2.5-3hrs A time (and do 1.5-2hr naps), and that's just not going to happen until she's at least 6 months.

7 am wake up E
7:30 A
8:15 tried to put to bed did shh/pat for 40mins no luck. removed LO from room and tried again 10mins later.
9 S
10 E (yes she woke up)
10:15 A
11 S
11:30 woke up tried shh/pat back to sleep..gave up at 12 baby was hysterical
1 E
1:45 S (i know wicked long A time but she really wasnt acting tired or anything)
2:10 she fussed i went in and realized she was jolting and crying. so i httj while patting her back. i did this until 3:10 and it was our first ever extended nap!
i googled naps earlier and found a site that said babies wake up b/c they cant go into the next cycle without what put them to sleep, thats why i started patting before she opened her eyes and luckily she never did open her eyes, but she was still screaming hysterically at points and was crying with her jolts...
3:33 woke up
wouldnt stop fussing so i fed her
3:40 E
4 A
4:40 catnap
5:30 i woke her from catap she flipped out
until i fed her
6 E
6:30A
7S

so obviously today wasnt flawless but it actually was a lot better than it has been lately! im going to try the whole patting and httj for all her naps tomorrow even though it lasted forevver and y bac is killing me from doing it once lol.
btw she doesnt bob off my breast she is sucking and rips herself off and it really hurts and then she latches right back on. idk if its because she has a cold but her nose doesnt seem stuffy. when i put my boob away b/c im like obvs your done she starts crying...so idk whats going on with that...

hmmm, is it possible she could also have some reaction to some food you are eating that comes through your breastmilk?? could you perhaps try eliminating dairy from your diet for a specific amount of time and see if it improves (im not sure about amounts of time for food to not affect breastmilk sorry)

With her nose, it may not seem stuffy but perhaps try a saline spray up her nose (dont know if its allowed at her age but im sure it is) we do this with Caleb before he eats so he can breathe better.

At the moment she seems to be OT soooooo perhaps try putting her to bed alot earlier for her first nap, maybe try at 8am?? shes nearly ready to go up to an A time of 1hr 20-30mins so it could be that shes not ready to go to bed so early first of all but as the day gets on shes becoming OT due to the short naps etc but we just need to get her out of OT mode first

i barely eat dairy and i have already tried that...i dont think its food related. also i take a probiotic so she rarely has gas anymore...i have actually been using saline also.
i was putting her in early for the first nap before and it backfired miserably..i literally have to wait until she starts fussing before i start our routine..then she falls asleep in like 5-10mins verses trying to get her to sleep for 40mins. yesterday i tried to put her down at the first yawn for her first nap and as you can see it backfired yeasterday too.
im working on the naps lol i extended 2 of them today but she jolted for 1hr 20min the first nap then 40the second nap but shes still screaming when she jolts so i question the quality of her naps...but we are trying!
