Dropping the milk-feed before bedtime?
« on: December 15, 2009, 09:08:25 am »
DS is having close to 12oz milk a day-plus cheese, yoghurt etc. he has about 8 in the am, and then 3-4 before bed time. Recently he's been a bit fussy about his bedtime milk, first I thought it was teeth since he seemed a bit better after putting on calgel but I'm not convinced, because even if we don't do calgel if we change positions a few time he will drink it. Do you think he's ready to pass on his bedtime milk? Do you guys still do it, or when did you drop it? My paed. said he should have a minimum of 6 oz a day, so if we did drop it he'd be just in there, although I could try and offer it at another point in the day if i wanted him to have more. It just seemed a good bedtime thing to do so I'm not sure what to do. Would he somehow feel hungry if he didnt get that milk before bed?

thanks!
xx

SIX ounces a day!!!  :o  At this age toddlers need 500mg of calcium per day - there is about 300 mg in 8oz of milk.

Here is a lit of some typical calcium containing foods so you can see if he gets enough calcium from other sources --

Milk, whole or low-fat     1 cup     300 mg
Soy or Rice Milk    1 cup    300 mg
White beans    1/2 cup    113 mg
Instant Oatmeal    1 cup    100 mg
Broccoli, cooked    1/2 cup    35 mg
Broccoli, raw    1 cup    35 mg
Cheddar cheese    1.5 oz    300 mg
Yogurt, low-fat    8 oz    300 mg
Orange juice, calcium fortified    1 cup    350 mg
Orange, medium    1    40-50 mg
Sweet potatoes, mashed    1/2 cup    44 mg

But, there is also the additional fat in whole milk that is not in orange juice, broccoli, etc.

I don't think there is an "age" to drop the bedtime milk...I STILL to this day have a glass of milk before bed each night!  If he doesn't want it, then I would offer it with his lunch and dinner instead. At this age lots of parents move to milk three or four times a day in smaller quantities so it is more like a drink with a meal rather than as a "feed" - so 4oz in the morning, lunch and dinner, kwim?

he's almost 15 months.
well she said 250ml, so thats about 6 oz isn't it? so from what you've said Mashi, he does seem to be getting enough calcium, since 12oz milk is about 450mg, and then he normally has porridge or semolina for breakfast and a fair amount of yoghurt and cheese.
I'll try at lunch and see what happens, thing is that he has his milk from a bottle and isn't quite good enough with a cup. but i could try it in a cup at lunch i suppose. he wont take it from a sippy.
thanks!

I know in the UK a minimum of 350mls is recommended after 1 year which is more like 12oz.  That total can include milk with cereal, yoghurt, cheese, etc.  6oz is closer to 180mls.
