How can I help him sleep more soundly?
« on: January 02, 2010, 13:39:49 pm »
J is one of those silly sleepers who is ALL OVER his cot. I have a video monitor so do know - but we also here him banging his head and yelping in his sleep all night long.

He constantly wakes himself up - cries for a few and then settles back to sleep.

Now I know this is normal for some lo's but it is driving me mad. Mainly as he is interrupting me and DH all night long.

He is in a small cot (not a convertable) and I have never bothered with cot bumpers as I can't see how they will help as he flips top to bottom all of the time as well.

He sleeps in pyjamas and a sleeping bag.

Is there ANYTHING we can do about this? I was wondering if a pillow would help at all - or a blanket or something?

Anyone got any ideas for me?

I am toying with getting a bigger cot as it might help and if it converts into a BBB later it wouldn't be such a waste of money as I can't see me getting J out of a crib at age 2 when I will need it again for number 2. He is a very small little boy and doesn't crib at all yet so is nowhere near coming out (and of course he would just land on the floor doing his acrobatics.

Stan started sleeping much more 'straight up and down' once I gave him a pillow... might be worth a try?

What sort of age did you start the pillow?

I think it was around 1. I got a Mothercare one but tbh wouldn't recommend as after the first wash it was all lumpy and never recovered. Now he just has a thin adults pillow. For the first few weeks he would often wind up sleeping across it (ie head on one side of the pillow, legs on the other).

Liz I would not have made the connection if you hadn't have suggested it -- but a pillow helped here, too.

DS is extremely active in his sleep - we hear him banging his head, rolling over and hitting the side of the cot and then I can tell he sits up, gets himself turned around and then thuds back down again.  I go in to turn the heat down when I go to bed and he's all over the place.

I started with a pillow about 2-3 weeks ago. He's had a small toddler pillow since 12 months old, but it was more for play....he liked to put it on his lap while playing in the living room, and things like that.  Couple of weeks ago when he was sick I put it in as a way to keep his head elevated while he was sleeping and have kept it in there.  Every night that I've gone in to check on him, he's sleeping in more or less the same place as I put him in when he went to bed...although sometimes he does turn himself around length-ways and sleeps on his pillow instead of just his head.

To make sure he didn't decide it was a toy, and to stop him from putting it over his face at night, I put it underneath the sheet, so he can't move it.  The one night I forgot to put the pillow in when I was making his bed, I snuck it in when I went to bed, and sure enough he woke at 6am giggling and laughing because his pillow was in there ::)

But definitely have had more calm sleeps since I have put that pillow in there!

Yey - lots of people saying the same  :D.

As the cot is small I will need to get a toddler pillow to make it fit in. I *doubt* J would play with it - but I'm not sure. I have just put Iggle Piggle in bed with him in the hope of him taking to something as well as his bear bear as I am paranoid about losing his wretched lovey and him never sleeping again. So far he has said hello a few times but hasn't done anything wild and crazy.

But I am definately going to end up with a toddler horizontal across a pillow  ::).

Someone told me that Tescos do a good cot pillow, if you've got a big store nearby?

Pillow here too!  Has really helped with the cot aerobics!  I never really made the connection until reading this post though but am sure that is what has helped.

Im glad I found this post - DD is also a cot acrobat and it drives me insane at night!!  I tried a pillow but she played with it so I like the idea of putting it under the sheet  ;).  Im trying that tonight!!  I cant ever imagine getting her into a BGB or loosing the sleeping bag  ::)

Can you just use a normal pillow from 12 months or do you need to get a special one?

X

I am also looking for a pillow for my lo.  She is growing out of her baby pillow.
I would think you need a flat pillow. I know Ikea has some toddler pillows.

I put a flat pillow under her sheet and she has so far wriggled about upside down a few times but eventually settled the right way up  :o.  Sabs - I think I have seen the pillows in ikea - I might pop in and get one if she seems to like it tonight.  It would be so nice for a night of less wriggling as she keeps me up a lot of the night with crying out from banging her head and wriggling!!

Hi Liz!  H decided on the eve of his second bday to no longer use his grobag.  :-(  But...he is sleeping in a blanket now (rolled like a burrito), and he seems to like it.  I should give a pillow a try by the sounds of it.  We still have his crib on an incline.  I am too afraid to take it out.  Any notice if there are fewer cry outs if lo has had more or less activity during the day?  I notice that H is much more settled for the night if he has had a good amt of physical activity, which is harder to get as it is winter now.

When dd was still in her cot and we visited my mum one weekend she woke herself up loads because she was banging her arms etc. on the sides of the cot mum had, which was smaller than ours.  your cot does sound small, but i guess if its not actually waking up your lo then maybe thats not such an issue.  no help at the moment i know but when he is big enough for a bbb we got the duvet set from grobag which i have to say has been brilliant.  dd did used to move around alot and i was sure she would throw herself out of bed, but the grobag duvet (which zips her in) coupled with a blanket rolled up has stopped any moving about.  and the pillow is fixed into place.  its a miracle i now always know which end of the bed i'm going to find her when i check on her!

Hi Jean  :).

Jacob is starting to fight the grobag as well actually - but seems to give in to distraction for the moment. I'm hoping we can get to the warmer months before dealing with that one.

Interesting observation about daytime exercise. It does help J's sleep but is hard to get now it is so cold and wet.

I have heard of the grobag duvet which sound great for the next stage.
