10week old suddenly fussy at the breast
« on: January 03, 2010, 02:45:01 am »
My LO is 10 weeks old.... BF only and have had no issues at all.  Suddenly she has become very fussy when I am feeding her.  She will latch on just fine and nurse for a few minutes, become distracted and then continually pull off the breast and fuss if I try to make her nurse.  She also seems to suddenly be favoring one breast.   Any ideas??   She is still sleeping, etc as usual.
Thanks!

AJ

well, its no faster than it has been the last 9 weeks.....  its all of a sudden she has started this.   And, when she doesn't fuss and does in fact nurse comfortably she has shortened her feed time substantially.   I just worry she's not getting enough.  It doesn't seem to be related to time of day or any other factor I can identify.  She would do it some in the weeks past but the fussiness would always precede a poopy diaper..... once she pooped she would go right back to the breast.  With this currrent behavior its like she's just not hungry but its been 3 hrs since her last feed.
Thanks for the input!

well the shortening of time is normal. As they grow older and they're suck more effective they can finish a feed pretty quickly. DD was able to finish a compleat feed in 5-7 feedings by that age.

Do you think she may not be actually hungry?

you know I've considered that she's not hungry..... but the fact that it seems really sudden that this is occuring makes me think its something else causing it.    She's just now getting up to 10lbs.....she was 5lb 8oz at birth...... and I assumed she'd always be an every 3 hrs eater.   Our whole routine is centered around the 3 hr schedule!  I don't even know how to start stretching it out and adjust her schedule.   Any advice on what a 4hr schedule looks like?

Just follow her lead and keep the general structure the same. You don't want it to rigid anyway, if she needs 3.5-4 hours then do that, if she then needs one sooner do that. This is where the flexability of EASY is really great.
