Waking my newborn twins up for every feeding?
« on: January 17, 2010, 02:43:33 am »
Hi all!!! I have very young newborn twins, only about a week old. They are the best babies so far, never cry, etc. They were born a bit premature. The boy weighs 5lb4oz, she weighs 4lb11oz. I haven't really wanted to start them on a schedule yet, but they have just kind of done it themselves. They are now taking probably 3 oz at each feeding (20min BF, then more breastmilk that I've pumped). The problem is that they are waiting anywhere from 3.5-4 hours between feedings, and I am still having to wake them up every time. They never cry to be fed. And some feedings are fabulous, while others I think I am waking them too early b/c they don't seem hungry and I can't wake them up! Isn't this crazy? Should I still be waking them up each time or let them wake me up when they're hungry? I honestly think if I let them, they would already sleep through the night, which I know is WAY to early to do yet, but its such a struggle to feed them b/c they are so sleepy. When they do eat, they do take a lot of food, so I know they are getting enough and they are gaining weight well. Also, any tips oin keeping them up while BF? I would love to feed them exclusivbely on the breast, but they fall asleep every time. I am having to do them one at a time now because they are so little, so any tips on keeping them actively feeding would be very helpful!!

Big (((hugs))) and congratulations on your babes!!

How premature are they?  Just asking because 1 week old is oh, so young, and their corrected age will bring them even younger!

You really do want to wake them for feeds - newborns are so sleepy that they will likely miss feeds if you don't.  Also, your milk supply is currently being established and you want to ensure that your breasts are properly stimulated so you can exclusively breastfeed.  Here are some links to FAQs that you will find very helpful:

Thank you so much for those helpful links! Right now they are at 37w6d gestation, so still a bit early, but not very premature. They are just still so small - 5lb3oz and 4lb9oz, so they just aren't very active on the breast as well as very sleepy. I am just going to start waking them up more frequently. I know they just don't seem hungry, but I'm going to try!
