rice ?
« on: February 03, 2010, 18:17:29 pm »
so my DD's pedi said she can only last on breast milk alone for 6 months..i was more into the wait until she seems ready to start solids but w/e i will deal
anyways she said to start her on rice because she will need the extra iron at 6 m/o. anyone else heard this?
what kind of rice? i want to make my own but does she mean literal rice? can i do whole wheat? do i blend it or something? I probably sound stupid but i'm not sure what she means and didnt have the time to ask her.
Someone bought me a box of baby rice but it has all this crap in it and im not feeding that to my baby...
does whole foods or anything sell organic baby rice? thats just rice...

Your ped was probably referring to baby rice cereal, and yes it's full of crap IMO!!  lol  It is very commonly said that babies MUST have cereal right at 6mos because their bodies run out of iron stores.  I took an infant nutrition class and learned that it's not like they have a timer, and as soon as they hit 6mos BAM, no more iron!  Between 6-12mos the iron stores do start to deplete and it is during that time you'll be working towards incorporating a variety of new foods into your LOs diet, many of which will include iron.  Also, BM and formula do contain iron still, and they should still be the main component of your baby's diet until 12mos.

I did start baby rice, and DS never liked it, so at 7mos I stopped giving it completely and focused more on BM and finding iron rich foods to give him.

Depending on who you talk to as well, I have heard that grains in general should be avoided until almost a year because they are difficult to digest.  Rice cereal can be very constipating.  :P

I have seen available where I am organic baby cereals, so they are available depending on where you live.  But TBH I wouldn't bother with those either.  I won't bother with cereals at all with my next LO, in my experience it was a waste of time!!

BUT, with that said your doctor's advice is always important.  My advice though is don't be afraid to do some research yourself as well and get lots of second opinions.  :)

Just from my experience, DS would never eat rice cereal, though he took to veggies and fruit.  I added according to the package of the rice cereal to BM or formular to thicken it.  DS is a hungry baby, so I really had to make sure he got enough food intake, still do.

I can't remember what the recommendations are for meat, but I do think you can start at 6mos.  We started later, but I think it was more procrastination on my part!   ::)  I'm terrible at remembering this stuff off the top of my head, but I'm sure you can find some iron rich veggies to that you can try.

But like I said, don't feel that if it takes you a month or two to figure out what to feed your LO she will run out of iron right at 6mos!  Take your time to look into it, and come up with a bunch of things you'd like to introduce.  You don't have to do it all at once, take it slow if you want.  She will still be getting iron from her liquids.  Good luck!!  Solids are fun!  :)

I've been looking into infant cereals as well as I want to be prepared when the time comes for my LO. I was shocked to read the list of ingredients on a box in the grocery store the other day!

If you're interested in making your own, you'll find recipies here: http://www.homemade-baby-food-recipes.com/baby-cereal-recipe.html  I haven't tried them yet though....

And this page provides info on iron and iron-rich foods: http://www.homemade-baby-food-recipes.com/iron-supplements-for-infants.html

hahaha i'm a total carnivore myself :P I wasn't sure why it's recommended to start with cereal, fruit and veggies.  Perhaps the digestive system is still developing.  I used only store-bought baby food *hung head low* because I just don't have the time.  The food with meat is only available from 8mo.

Meat is a heavy protein and really hard for babies to digest as a first food. Just think of ourselves- if we were to eat a plate of veggies (without sauces :P) we feel pretty good afterwards, if we were to eat a steak it might sit heavy in our tummy as it takes so much longer to digest.

Just as babies are develping on the outside, their digestive systems are developing on the inside.

koe2moe, don't beat yourself up about the store bought baby food, home made baby food potentially is very time consuming to make. There is nothing wrong with the jars of baby food available to buy, the only thing with it is that there is not the full variety compared to homemade stuff. Just make sure you read the ingredients, the very odd one has sugar added, and you want to stay away from that. The cereal does have extra stuff (oils, etc) added but it does have loads of good stuff to (all the vitamins, iron, etc). My dd ate the boxed, baby cereals and she turned out just fine ;).

Thanks so much!  I did try and i just couldn't cope.  Yeah it's lucky that we could get some with no additives at all.  DS is eating very well now, still store bought baby food which has great varieties and enough veggies and carbs intake.  Soon he can eat all our normal homecooked meals :D

just to let you know there are other opinions out there, my lactation consultant did recommend for us to start with meat as the first food at 6 months ( for breastfeed babies)... so who knows, guess its just a matter of using ur best judgement and seeing how baby handles it... good luck!

Tracy, in her book, states that you can start your baby on solids other than rice at 6 months and she recommends pears as the first foods as they are naturally sweet and easy to digest.
I wouldn't listen too much to doctors; instead listen to other mums. One lady at church told me yesterday that her 10 mointh old is already on cows milk; this is her 7th child, hasn't killed any of them with her weaning methods!!!!!!!
I am going to start on pear and work my way through fruits and root veg and then at about 9 months start adding little bits of chicken here and there. There is a good 12 week plan for weaning in the Baby Whisperer book!

I've heard good things about barley cereal- there's an organic line that does it here in Canada and apparently it has fewer additives and is great because it's more of a whole grain. That being said, I've also been advised to wait until 6 months for that one because it's not as easy to digest as rice.... I ned to start my own research now.  I don't think there is any one right way- just what works for you and what your baby will take :)  Good luck!
