long nap, short nights - is this ok?
« on: February 06, 2010, 19:31:10 pm »
Hi all,

Just wanted to make sure that I'm not setting myself up for disaster here ;)

Dylan is 16mo and has been taking 2.5-3.5h naps lately, both at home and at daycare :o :o but because of the naps, we've been getting late bedtimes and short nights.  His routine looks like:

daycare (M-F)
wake 7/730
nap 1230-315/4 (they don't put them down for a nap until after lunch)
bedtime 830, but usually doesn't fall asleep until 9ish

home (weekends)
wake 7/730
nap 1130-230/3
bedtime 830, usually falls asleep quickly

So, he's typically only getting about 10h of night sleep, but 3-3.5h of day sleep for 13ish hours total sleep in 24h.  I know that the total sleep is ok, but am I setting myself up for problems with the short nights?  I don't love the late bedtimes, but D's STTN fairly consistently so I'm willing to go with what works.

Any thoughts?

i think at this point you have to go with what works for you.you cant get both so go with what is working.i have recently cut D's naps to get a longer night and we are in a terrible OT mess so my advice to you is dont cut his nap!!! :P
if his naps get shorter just be sure to bring bedtime a bit earlier to avoid OT setting in.

i have to say i am so jealous of those long naps!! ::)

Ava is kind of grumpy on a short night and will sometimes make up for it with a long nap. If he is happy and consistently taking that long nap to even his sleep out...it's probably okay.
