Sleeping bag to blankets/sheet/quilt/doona
« on: February 12, 2010, 09:18:31 am »
Hi girls,

Anyone have any tips on how to transition a LO from a sleeping bag to regular bed clothes i.e. sheet, blanket, quilt etc??  DS is 16 months and its becoming a battle to get him zipped up for naps and bedtime.

We transitioned naturally during the summer when it was too hot for a sleeping bag - so at first he was just sleeping in his nightclothes with nothing over top. I found that giving him a pillow helped him to stay more in roughly one position. When it started to get a bit cooler at night, he wouldn't let me put a blanket on him so I made sure he was wearing warmer PJs and would go in and put a blanket over him once he was asleep. For us, a cot sized quilt in the cot really didn't work - it was too small, it just got kicked off. A bigger blanket stayed put better. He went into a big boy bed at about 22 months and a single bed sized duvet being bigger and heavier seems to stay on him pretty well, although if I get up in the night to pee I do check on him that he hasn't come uncovered.

No experience yet - as we're still using grobags, but interested to hear what others say.

Have you seen these?

think they're a bit pricey - but a great idea

HI rachel, I am also still using a sleeping bag. My problem is that DD just moves ALL over the cot and there is no way she'll ever stay under a quilt/sheet. So far she still has been ok with the zipping up.

I just wonder when they will stop moving so much in their sleep. She literally rolls from one end to the other to get comfortable. how odd!?

We now use a "walk in" sleeper at night which has a 2.5tog rating but DS is such a wriggler!!

lurking here. We are having zipp-issues too! i have bought a cot-bed duvet and some new matching sheets, might just give it a go one night. But as you say about the wriggling, its crazy to expect him just to lie still, he's all over the place!

Thanks for the responses ladies.

My feeling was just to let him sleep in his pj's and then gradually add a sheet as the weather gets cooler.  Like most LOs he does move around the cot a lot and really only sleeps on his tummy.

I have seen the grobag duvets but we have already gone and bought him a king single sized bed.

I have seen the 'walk in' pj's and I think they're a great idea.

Thanks again!

We transitioned dd at 18mo and it went really well.  We were so scared to do it since she's does acrobats in her sleep.  We went to buy her comforter and pillow together, let her watch us put the case on.  Dad played w/ her on the couch pretending to tuck her in and she loved it.  For night, we just cut her over and she no longer wiggle around as much.  Good luck!  We're onto bgb transition next.
