4 hour routine cofusion
« on: February 16, 2010, 15:03:35 pm »
Hi i was wondering if anyone can help me sort out the four hourly routine in my head.  I have read posts on here saying babies should be able to handle 2h A time before changing and my little one, although 4 and a half months can manage no longer than an hour to an hour and a half (depending on the time of day!)

In baby whisperer solves all your probs she has 3-6 months 'you now have a baby who has an hour and 20 mins of awake time in him (including feeding).  he should be able to play on his own for fifteen or 20 mins, and then he will start getting fussy.  At this point he is close to needing a nap, so it is a good idea to let him wind down in his cot.'

well this is exactly my little one
E - 7
A - 7:30 fussy 20 or so mins later so up to cot where he chats for 20 or so mins before falling asleep
S - 8:10/8:20

but this does not fit the 4 hourly routine!!!!!!!  (even if he slept for a full 2 hours, which he doesnt at this point!)  now i asume these times are for the 3 month old more than the 6 month old but my 4 and a half month old still needs to fit in somewhere and it is not till the 6-9 months bit where she says 'your baby can now stay up for around 2 hours including her feed'  this is the point to me there fore that it makes sense for tehm to fit into a four hour routine!!!! Please help me understand all this, that is why i purchased '...solves all your probs' in the first place as her first book did not go into enough detail!

if they can only stay up for 'around' 2 hours at 6 months, then what should a 4or5month olds routine look like????  I am so confused!

Hi Mosh!
So nice to meet you and welcome to the BW boards :)

4 months is an exciting time for a baby! they're no longer so helpless and their life doesn't completely revolve around sleep and eat (much! hehe).

I know it sounds like there's some sort of 'switch' at 4 months that suddenly a baby can do 2 hours of A time. However, every baby is different! It sounds like your baby may need to a 3.5 hour transition before embarking on a 4 hour EASY. It sounds like your baby will benefit with starting with a 3.5 hour EASY :)

Also, babies are notoriously habitual! they love and THRIVE on routine ;) so, yes they will start getting tired and exhibit sleepy cues at the time when they're used to being put to sleep because, hey, that's what they expect to do! They're just getting their bodies ready for that sleep that will follow! So what we need to do is sneak in some A time without them really 'knowing', ykwim? This can be: a walk around the home/condo with a bjorn, an extra book or two, rocking in the dark with your lo before the wind down...etcetc...just 5 minutes every 3 days until one day they're able to do the full 2 hours :) Does that make sense?

I've listed some really useful links below that will help you sort out your routine and give you an idea of what a 3.5 hour routine looks like.

hth :)

Thank you so much for your reply!!!

I still have a couple of problems though.  he is a touchy so i find it very difficult to extend his A times... i can but when he does then go in he struggles to fall asleep rather than winding down himself for 10 mins.  but the thing is, as odd as this sounds, he sometimes actually falls asleep quicker (more unhappily though) if i put him in later than if he has that winddown by himself.  any tips to extend the time without the risk of OT in a touchy???

the other thing is that he is sometimes tired by quarter to 8 and sometimes 10 past so to push him to 8:15 every day would be impossible without a meltdown.  do i push him 5 mins from the time he gets tired that day or would this not actually bring him round to a four hour routine???

thanks for your support!

so sorry I'm just getting to this.

With touchy babies, you're right - they don't like a long wind down. They like quick and fast.

What would happen if you put him in his crib and do the wind down from there? i.e. go through your usual thing like reading, closing blinds, turning off the light etc ..but have him already in his bed? would that help?

Yes, you just focus on one A time. The first one is the easiest to push. Just do 5 minutes every 3 days..very slowly so the body gets used to it. You'll get there Claire.

Cheers hun.  Have actually decided to wean him early!!! Think half his probs are needing solid food so he cannot play happily or sleep for longer periods anymore.  It will also be a good way to sneak up his As.

He def fits into Tracy's might need to wean early category!!!  he is actually the size his brother was at 8 months!!!

I am also gonna try and stick to the clock a little more.  if i clock watch for the food I can def rule out hunger and know with conviction that he is tired (which i sometimes wonder later in the day).

thanks again!

ok..keep us posted!

Always watch your munchkin first and the clock second! :) EAS does help rule out whether it's hunger, sleep etc. It's tough though when they're small as they could still be going through growth spurts, yk?

Good luck and lots of *hugs*
