2:1 Has it worked?
« on: February 20, 2010, 06:38:55 am »
I was wondering how much sleep an almost 13mth old should get for naptime.

He was doing 45mins-1hr in the morning and 1.5hrs at lunchtime, but he was pushing his A times back slowly which was making things difficult for his 3yr old sister who was on school holidays as he wanted to sleep mid morning and mid afternoon isn't conducive to playdates and entertaining big sis!  I know it's not recommended - but hey, sometimes these things have to be done!
We were on:
W- 6.45
E - 7
S -10.15
A - 11-11.15
E -12.30
S - 2.15
A - 3.45
E - 6
S - 7-15-7.30pm

Now the last few days I have had to push him to 1 nap to help entertain his sister and he has done:

W - 7.15/7.30
E - 7.30
S - 12
A - 2.15/2.30
E - 6
S - 7.15/7.30

So he has done 2-2.5hr naps without me having to interefere at all which is what he was getting on 2 naps.  Great news!  The only problem is last night he woke at 1030pm and 4.30am.  I needed to settle him both times, the first time it only took a few mins the 2nd I was in for an hour with him.  Part of the problem is I now don't know if this is because he is OT (but would he be if he still naps the same length of time just over 1 nap not 2?).  We are also having pretty big Seperation Anxiety issues at the moment (often having to do GW when getting him to sleep and Heaven help us if mummy isn't the one to get him up from a nap!!).
What do you think?
I can easily do 2 naps some days if necessary (big sis is back at school on Monday!) so that's not a problem, I just don't know if this NW is linked to naps or SA.  Any ideas?
Thanks
Vicki

I think if he woke at 10.30pm that sounds a little OT to me and if you're concerned he is getting a little OT too what about a slightly earlier bedtime for a day - say 6.30pm?  I guess when big sis is back at school alternating 2 nap days with 1 nap days may work.

I was going to suggest what Laura said - if you are going with 1 nap, I would do an early bedtime for a while until your LO adjusts.

For my DS going back and forth from 2 nap days to 1 nap days has helped us tremendously with OT. We switched back and for from 13 months to 15 months and now (he is 15 months) we are pretty much on 1 solid nap bc he refuses the morning. I know some LOs don't handle the back and forth well, but it seemed to work very well with mine. So that is definitely an option for you. That 4:30am wake up sounds like OT to me. When I got one of those, I always put him one 2 naps the following day.

HTH!
