Waking ev hour- please help.
« on: March 08, 2010, 15:31:42 pm »
Please help. DS is waking up at night every 30 min-1hr sometimes, starting around 2. Other nights, he sleeps right til 4 or 5. I have tried to figure out the difference b/t these nights, but there seems to be no difference. He has been taking a feed b/t 5-6 for 4 months now, and I read somewhere that night feeds can sometimes cause NW. Once they learn they don't eat at night, then they may wake less. So we did the "1 fewer oz. each night" method, and he did ok with it. Last night was only 2 oz. of water & tonight will be nothing, so we'll see. He is hungry at wake up time now, which is good, bc he never used to be bc of that feed.

Anyway, as soon as we give him his paci, he goes right back to sleep, so I know everyone's gonna say to wean the paci, and that is our next step, but could something else be causing it if he's only waking the last half of the night & some nights not at all? There are even times he falls asleep on his own without the paci, so IDK how dependent he is on it. It's just the quickest way to get him back to sleep. (plus we needed to keep it to wean off that feeding.)

DH is very close to CIO which I don't want. I have a bad back & don't like PU/PD anyway, so I was going to try just patting & using my voice til he goes to sleep. Is that ok? Anyone else's kid do this that doesn't use a paci? what was causing it? TIA!

HI there, it could be several things.  Yes it does sound like the paci is a prop if he resettles when you replug but then wakes again when it is out.  Is he teething?  Could he be having discomfort of some kind?  What does his day look like, is he napping well?

Patting and using your voice is fine at this stage, we never did PU/PD either.  We used shush/pat and now just a variation thereof since he's older.
The tweaking never stops!

His naps have pretty much straightened out lately. His A time is now 2.5 hrs. He takes a CN still and then 2 others, usually one is long & one is short, but at times they are both a good 1.5 hrs. I thought it could be discomfort since it is so on & off, but I have no clue what it would be as during the day he seems fine. (Like yesterday afternoon he was fussy & pulling at his ear but then he didn't wake up til 4 am last night which is a good night, so I can't figure out what's bothering him.) I guess we'll just try to wean the paci & see if that helps. I just hate to bc he's at the age where a lot of ppl say they can replug themselves, & also I replug to extend naps, which I totally don't mind doing since I'm AWAKE! :) Is it at all possible to keep it for naps & not f/ NW's?

The weaning off the 5 am feed is going great as the past 2 nights he didn't really act like he wanted any food, so yay on that one. :) Course now he is waking up at 6:30 instead of 7:30. ug! But daylight savings is nx wk, so I guess it soon will be 7:30!
