7 wo cannot stay asleep
« on: April 02, 2010, 03:29:58 am »
My 7 week old dd cannot stay asleep in her cot during naps.
She need help to go to sleep and i would do shh-pat for as long as an hr to get her to fall asleep but then she would wake in a few minutes after i stop, maximun 20 mins.
Sometimes she would cry after waking, but sometimes she will babble in her cot for as long as 45 mins, dozing on n off in between before really cry out loud.
what can i do? shh-pat for the whole duration of the nap?

she is on 3 hrs easy
feeding time 7, 10, 1, 4, 6, 7(top up), 10:30
night waking is normally 2-5 times, usually a nite feed between 2-4
A time last from 15min-30min, usually i take her to her room 1hr-1hr15 after she got up.
breast feeding exclusively usually last 15 min or less except the dream feed last more than 30 min
one breast at a time except the DF

HI there, I am popping this over the Naps board for you since it sounds like you need some support with extending naps.
The tweaking never stops!

She sounds OT to me.  If it's taking an HOUR of shush/patting for her to fall asleep, then you haven't had 1h-1h15 of A time, you've had 2h-2h15 A time! A time is from the moment their eyes open until they fall asleep.

So, I think even though 1h=1h15 is the 'average' for this age gruop, your LO needs less A time.  I'd probably take her to her room about 45-50 min after waking and then do your shush pat.  That way you've got nearly 30 minutes to get her to sleep and still have her within a reasonable sleep window.

As she gets better at falling asleep independnetly, you'll probably be able to go to her room later as you won't need to use up A time with the shush/pat part of the arrangement.

Thanks, I miscalculated the A time, it is indeed 1hr-1hr15.
And thanks for the tips, it is indeed OT as I try to put her to bed at 630 and allow her 2 hrs nap for a day as long as she can stay asleep, she naps much better.
After a week of shh-pat, the time needed to get her down shorten a great deal, now is only 3-15 min max and she can settle on her own once.
I am so relief.

Excellent!!! So happy for you!

You will eventually be able to eliminate shush/pat completely! You'll just slowly withdraw your shushing and patting, and she'll learn to fall asleep all by herself!

And don't freak out if she 'forgets' how to stay asleep around 12 weeks old.  That's totally normal, and if it happens just come on back and we'll help you thru it!

Good job, mama!  :)
