How to get rid of the dummy - 22 months
« on: May 08, 2010, 20:44:39 pm »
Hi,

I need some help.......please!!

Our DD is 22 months and I cannot get her dummy off her!!!  If at all I only want her to have it at nap times, but she will not give it to me.  If I try and take it off her she screams blue murder!!  She's at daycare 2 times a week and happily hands it over after her nap.

Thanks

I am going to pop this over to toddler sleep, you will get more age appropriate responses there :)

You can take a look at this link and see if anything there would work.

We had lots of issues around 22mo with DS1 because he was teething his eye teeth (& had a new baby brother) & once they were sorted he wanted it less. One rule we made was if he wanted it he had to be in his room or sitting on the sofa, otherwise he couldn't have it. One thing I found in the early days was to make sure if we were doing 1:1 things he absolutely didn't have it & worked on it in small steps.

I think its small steps but you have to be prepared for a few days of protest.  My LO is 2 and only has her dummy at sleep times.  It was a rough week but we followed through and made sure to have lots going on.  Now she will ask for it and laugh and then say 'dummy when I'm doing to sleep'.  Just make sure once you start you absolutely don't give it back at any time except for sleep times otherwise it'll confuse her and make it harder for her in the long term.

We had a couple of weeks a while back where I had the most awful morning sickness and all that early pregnancy tiredness and she did have it more than at sleep times as she's teething her canines and miserable but once I got back to full power it was back to sleep times only and she didn't bat an eye lid.
